What is the primary function of your woodshop?

I am forced to admit that the primary function of mine is to use it to work on my woodshop...

I do occasionally "make something" not for the woodshop but that seems less important than it used to be.

At one time I was going to be a production shop and may yet on a more limited basis some day but if I want to increase my income a bit more I'll be ahead doing it with the boot shop.

What about your shop?

It seems that I do two things in my shop. Make a little bit of saw dust (that needs to be swept up) and redo alignments that are already in spec.

To provide large flat surface (AKA workbench) for my wife to pile stuff on!!!

Mine has in the last couple of years become a support facility for my marquetry shop. I have lots of fun doing the marquetry and then head out to the rest of the shop to make "something to mount it on".

Primary function - escape cave from family, work and life...that one place I can occasionally steal a few token moments to myself. When they discover me in the workshop, I have to retreat to the only remaining place no one ventures to bother me...under the house in the crawlspace. When it comes to it, there's always some plumbing or electrical work that needs to be done under there.

Other than that, these days I haven't had time to accomplish much in the shop other than store a bunch of stuff I don't have tim eto play with and slowly work on restoring my SS MV500. We have an offer in on a new house that not only has a two-car garage but also a two-bay workshop - more space then I could dream of, so I was sold before I saw the rest of the house. Fingers crossed the seller bites on our offer...with interest rates at a fixed 3.375%, it's a great time to buy a second house :-)

Provide storage space for my wife's things.
Maintaince shop for my lawn equip and things around the house.
Place to store my nice shiney tools and things I like to play with

My shop is for the most part a three car garadge. Except now it houses a thousand gallon oil tank, one car and of course the shop. As for what kind of work I do in the the shop, well that depends on what project I'm working on at the time. Lately, I've been doing quite a bit of organizing and metal working projects. I've been putting in shelves along the walls to utilise space better and get things I don't use everyday up and out of the way. I've also been working on an old sprayer I bought back in October. I have several Fruit trees that seem to have developed quite a few bug problems over the last couple of years. So, come spring I hope to get a head start on controling those buggers. I also have several things I want to get painted this winter. I figure painting is a good project for a cold/rainy/snowy day when working outside is just completely unpleasant. As for wood working projects, I really do not have anything on the immediate horizon. However, last weekend I did realise that I do need to come up with somekind of rack to store the batteries and chargers for my cordless drills. So who knows, there maybe a wood working project on the horizon.

My shop is also part of a three car garage, that has never in 16 years stored a vehicle. It has always been a 3-car gym. Rubber mats, mirrors and all. With my back needing a double disk fusion due to the hvac industry, my work outs have taken much more of a back seat. However we've had 5 kids, a niece and all their friends and my wife and I spend a bunch of time out there over the years.
Now SS is slowing taking over, I am using about 1/3 of it now as dedicated workspace. However I am in x-mas production of smaller gifts ect for friends and family. Going to see the "out of business" wood guy at his home today to score some maple and walnut for the current projects.

My woodshop is 9' x 15' building in the backyard that is mine and nobody elses. Only I have the keys to the shop. It is a place for me to sit and smoke a cigar and have a drink and stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter while doing so.....uuuuhhhh.......I mean it is where I go to do woodworking be it making a wine rack, a box, fixing a picture frame, new storage and tool cabinet for the shop, or to do some gunsmithing.

My workshop exists to give me my own place to do whatever I want to do! Whether I need a creative outlet and decide to make something, or if I just want to sit there and listen to music and daydream about all the tools I don't have yet. If I want to leave it a mess, I can and not be fussed at for it!
