Put some talcum powder on the belt. If that stops the noise it was the belt.

Steps in the shaft diameter/retraining/stop rings.

I rcommend spraying belt conditioner on the belts at the same time as you lubricate the headstock. It really keeps reduce the strange belt noises over time. I store my belt inside out after spraying them with belt conditioner. The belt conditioner seems to help prevent any belt problems like fraying, drying and cracking over time.

I found the belt noise was the only problem with a customer headstock a few times.

Well I replaced the bearing. I, of course, was tighting up the quill so the string wouldn't unwind. My hand slipped off the large "wing nut" and the handle quickly went completely back to where it was before I started this process and the quill fell out into my other hand.

Proceeding along blindly with what to do I rewound the string and tightened it down this time with the wing nut jobby.

Then came getting the bearing out which was really a snap (no pun intened) and out came the shaft just like it was susposed to do. Then the bearing! A couple, actually quite a few with a rubber mallet, and the shaft was free. I slid the new bearing one and a few, really just a few this time, and the bearing was on as far as it would go. Back into the quill with the ring in place and in it went into the head of the machine and when I released the "brake" it went in about half way but didn't want to go in al the way. So I took it out again and when I did it the second time it went in all the way.

Don't know why it wouldn't go in all the way the first time but really doesn't matter as it is in now. Then up to max. speed and no squeak or squeel like I had before.

I do have a bit more noise coming out of it than I thought I would but will try a little powder, as one person mentioned and see if that quiets it down even more. Actually I am satisfied with the sound now but if the powder works it will be pretty quiet.

Thanks for all your help.

I have put a new thing that is going on up in this section to see if someone can tell me what to do with it.

Again thanks for all your help.
