Asleeo at the Jointer
Since I know this is a good resource for help I'm posting a question concerning some Jointer work I did today. Evidently I went a bit brain dead while jointing a rough edge of some Oak. I started with jointing the face and got that without any issues but when I started jointing the edge I started with one end of the board at 3 1/4 and the other end at 3 inches. When I finished I had somehow milled it down to 2 3/4 and just a hair under 3 inches. Checked everything on the jointer and all was ok. I was trying to make sure the pressure was on the outfeed table. Maybe to much pressure on the leading edge. Checked the outfeed table and it was even and as it should have been.

Are you saying you removed 1/2" from one end, and just a hair from the other?putttn wrote:Since I know this is a good resource for help I'm posting a question concerning some Jointer work I did today. I am guessing the board was bowed out in the middle of the edge.
If so, you started each pass at an angle that caused the trailing end to be above the infeed table.
When jointing, ya need to first determine where the high areas are and mill them down first. Then start each pass with the board referenced to the infeed table, and only concentrate on the outfeed when a sufficient length of the workpiece has been fed onto it.

Been there, done that!:Dputttn wrote:I guess that must be what was going on because I marked the edge and the marking at the end of the board never got touched while the leadind edge just kept cutting down. I'm slowly learning.

I decided to really "analyze" that board and sure enough, there is a distinct bow in the middle of the board when standing it on its' edge.
I'm guilty of rushing into cutting boards without really looking at what is going on with the board. I brought the board inside tonight and used my Square to really look at what's going on. I didn't take the time to read the grain correctly nor did I check the board for twits or bow. First thing I'm going to start using are winding sticks and use my square. Have a couple of excellent squares but haven't got winding sticks yet. Any suggestions?

Puttn, attached is a PDF index for the Woodsmith videos on woodworkingonline.com. Episode #17 is about squaring lumber and, I believe, may answer all your questions about using the jointer. If all works as it should all you have to do is open the PDF index, click on the episode you want to watch and it should launch your browser to the episode you want to watch. Hope it works for you.
