Turning chuck

Post by hjlssfor1 »

I am trying to get set up for wood turning, and I need a lathe chuck for my 510.
SS sells the Nova G3 turning chuck for $184.95, and this includes (1) the insert/adapter to attach the chuck to the SS shaft, (2) a T-wrench, (3) a wormwood screw, and (4) pin jaws.
Woodcraft (and maybe other retailers) has on sale (through December 28) the Supernova 2 with 4 jaws (50mm, 25mm jaws, 35mm spigot jaws, & soft jaws) for $199 (see here). The package includes T-bar, Allen wrenches, woodworm screw, and manual. As I understand it from reading various threads on this forum, I also would need to purchase the 15M80 insert/adapter for $23 (see here).
Does anyone care to compare and contrast the two chucks and the packages?
Is the Supernova 2 the correct size and a good fit for my 510 (I am curious because SS has chosen to offer only the G3)?
All in, the SS price for the G3 is $184.95 (excluding shipping and taxes). All in, the Woodcraft price would be $199 plus $23 (excluding taxes, but I might be able to avoid shipping charges if the local store has the two items in stock). Considering the extra jaws, how does the more expensive Supernova 2 package come out in the comparison?
Are the four jaws in the Woodcraft package overkill for a beginner?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try looking on the internet tool suppliers for deals on chucks. Tools-Plus on the net has the Nova chuck on sale for a low price but they say they are backordered for now. If you can afford the wait go for it. Wood magazine rated the Nova a good buy but not the top tool but very close to the One Way Talon chuck which did win the top award. Not much of a difference in the Wood mag report to justify the increased price unless you are going to use the chuck on a daily basis.
Extra jaws are not overkill for a newcomer. Better to have them and put them aside for later. You will use them eventually.

I just checked the Tools-plus website and they list the chuck at $122.40 but it is out of stock at this time

Make sure you get the correct adapter. There was an issue a while back with the wrong adapter being supplied for the Shopsmith. The correct adapter should have a 5/32 Allen screw and has the part number ISNS.

For a while people were getting another one. Here is a link to read all about it:

I know Shopsmith & Teknatool & woodworkerspecialties.com have made sure anyone who received the incorrect adapter were provided a replacement for the IFNS adapter that was sent out with many kits. I don't know about any other companies. I think the link will answer any questions you might have.

My solution

Being on a very limited budget, I finally splurged and bought myself a chuck. Mind you this is my first chuck and I've been turning for longer than I care to admit. Penn State had their "utility chuck" on sale for under $100. It included the screw, pin jaws, #2 jaws, jumbo jaws and an adapter to fit the 1x8 TPI chuck to my 3/4x16 mini-lathe. I also got the adapter to fit it to the SS (seems like it was about $20). It seems to be a pretty nice chuck, especially for the price. It is chrome plated, heavy and solid feeling. The only "drawback" is that it is a two stick chuck instead of those expensive ones that take a single handle to loosen/tighten. I haven't found that to be a major inconvenience and I have been using the chuck a LOT the last few weeks getting Christmas ready. My only real complaint is that I wish the jaws were dovetails instead of serrated, but for my skill level it is just fine. I even took it to the local woodturners meeting to let the other guys see it and some of those whom I look up to (skill-wise) thought it looked like a great deal. I suspect a few even went home and bought one for dedicated set-ups.
Just my two cents ......

chuck is $89.95, adapter is $16.95

The adapter for the Shopemith isn't chrome plated to my knowledge. Just trying to ave you some time and prevent the a potential accident.

But you might be ok. It might be a 5/8 diameter bore, but there are other factors like the 5/32" Allen screw and the special taper on the quill spindle.

Getting late. Good luck. I happen to go for the savings and ended up with 3 different adapters before getting the correct one. But it's all in that link in the previous message starting from maybe page 3 & on.

The Nova 5/8 bore "F" adapter will fit the Shopsmith but the set screw is bored straight through the side of the adapter. The newer 5/8 bore "S" adapter has the set screw bored at an angle to match the angle of the tapered flat on the the Shopsmith spindle.

You may have to talk to the folks at Teknatools in Florida to get the newer "S" adapter. I didn't find a reference to the newer adapter on their web site today, however.

For what it's worth, I've had the "F" adapter on one of the original Nova chucks for quite a few years and not had a problem, but if I were buying one today I'd probably want the "S" adapter.

And I have an "F" adapter that is drilled at the angle (correct allen size too) that came with my chuck which I purchase from years back from shopsmith....

Just saying they were not "all" wrong.

Well, that's interesting, Ed. I'm curious then why Teknatool then decided to make an "S" adapter? Perhaps if someone bought a Nova chuck through Shopsmith you automatically got the adapter with the set screw bored at an angle.

Thanks, everyone, for your advice.

I take it that no one considers the Supernova 2 to be the wrong size for a SS.

I have the G3 purchased fairly recently from Shopsmith and I love it, the quality is very good. It came with the adapter. This is my first chuck so I am unable to compare them. The one possible objection to the larger chuck is the load from the extra weight, I saw that mentioned when researching the G3, but I don't know if that's a real issue or not. I suppose the G3 is the more conservative choice. You'll be happy with either one I reckon.

Personally I like to buy from Shopsmith when the price is about the same.
