Side Mount Drawer Slides

The outside and vertical drawer slides were easy to shim. I had a package of poplar shims and all I did was clamp one slide in place, Open the slide like I was opening the drawer, find where I wanted to drive a screw, slide a shim in down from the top and drive the screw through the shim and into the cabinet wall.

However, and its a BIG however, I took apart the old drawers and used the existing pieces to narrow them so I knew their size precisely so I knew that they would fit in the space once I put in the sildes

Restructuring the drawers was easy once I came up with a repeatable method. I took off the back using spreader clamps, sawed the sides from the drawer front using a oscillating saw leaving the front of the drawer attached to the front trim piece, removed enough from each side so it was exactly the width I wanted when the sides are reattached. cut the rear to length, ripped the drawer bottom to new width and reassembled everything. REALLY wished I had had the Kreg screw jig when I had done this, but clamps and glue still made it work. Again, this was easy because I was making all the drawers in the vertical cabinet the same width so once I got the hang of destruction, reconstruction was a snap.

I had 3 drawers that were under the counter and no cabinet walls (except on the far sides) to mount to so I improvised. I measured the distance between the back wall and the back of the face frame and then between adjacent openings of the left and center drawers and made a glued up block of plywood pieces (probably would have been quicker to trim down a 2x4) and then attached small metal L brackets that I would screw to the back wall and the back of the face frame. Clamped the slide in place and set the plywood shim against the outside of the slide, fit it flush to the rear wall and the back of the face frame attached it using the L brackets. Then it was a simple matter to screw the slide to that. Since the plywood shim was made to width, it made the attachment for the left side of the other drawer a no measure no brainer . Did the same thing once more for a piece between the center and right side drawer and attached the outside slides (left and right to the cabinet walls). It might sound cumbersome, but the biggest hassle is getting the width of the plywood piece correct and that's why I think in hind sight (such a wonderful tool ;) ) that ripping a 2x4 to width would have been MUCH quicker). Also, in hindsight I might have put an L bracket ABOVE as well as UNDER or better yet some sort of cleat under the plywood bracket to help support the weight, but then that might have been overkill.

Anyway, I hope that helps. It is MUCH easier to do than trying to make sense of my explanation. :o

I just finished replacing a worn out drawer box and slide. The slides from my late 1970s era cabinets are similar to these from Rockler so I thought it would be a slam dunk. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?site ... &page=2327

I made a beautiful new box then removed the old slides. However, the new slides were very difficult to install. I think it would have been much easier without the counter top installed. I managed to get it done but I will not use this same hardware again. Back to the drawing board.

Well the guy said he wasn't in too big a hurry and sometime early in the new year would be fine. So I'm finishing the project I referenced here

I'm supposed to begin installing this Sunday. I busy waiting for paint and some glue to dry right now.

I'm still concerned about this because I'm pretty sure it will be a lot more difficult to install them in someone else's finished kitchen than on a new project in the shop. Just reaching in between the rails of the smaller drawers when you don't have access from the top or rear???

But thanks for asking and I'll be sure to report on it when it's complete.

That video seems REAL complex. By using the Kreg jigs (I presume the Blum jig would work just as well though I don't know how it would hold the drawer), all I did was clamp one jig to one side of the face frame drawer opening and set the drawer slide in place. The magnets hold the slide. It was level and the correct distance from the side of the cabinet because of the jig - took a shim (actually only a piece of a shim about 2 inches or so) and let it drop down from the top between the cabinet side and the slide and sort of friction fit to the correct spacing between the cabinet wall and the slide. I used two shims per side, a shim in the middle and towards the end, but I think that may be over engineering! :p Then just used a screw to secure it. For the four drawers that were stacked all I did was go from one side to the other top to bottom.

At first I did separate the two pieces and mounted the wall side piece first, but then I found that I could just extend (pull out) the piece that mounts to the drawer so I had access to the mounting holes. I did however manage to mangle one drawer slide doing that :o so I went back to separating them to mount the wall side and then putting them back together before attaching the drawer.

I'm sure it would have been significantly easier without a counter top, but I had plenty of room to reach in on the stacked drawers. The three horizontal drawers under the counter would have been a snap with no counter top, but I had room from underneath because there were large cabinets under them, but it seemed like I was a plumber reaching up under a sink :( This is also where I put the brackets that attach to the back wall (along with the cleats in between the drawers), but all I did was slide them on to the back end of the slide an extended it to the wall and screw them in place. The more I think about it, the drawer slides added structure to the whole cabinet!! :D

Frankly, the Kreg jigs did all the work of getting the slides and the drawer
sides, plumb and evenly spaced. The videos that I posted links by the man who created the jigs - about the only difference is that I used a shim to fill the gap at the middle and back end and he just screwed the slide directly to the wall.

I presume that the jigs will work with any metal drawers slide.

If you are only going to do one drawer then I think the cost of the jigs is spendy (about $30 on sale for both) and only save you in the amount of aggravation it reduces and possibly the time it saves, but it you are installing more than a couple drawers or plan more for a future project then think of it as an investment.
