Nova chuck and ss adapter

I need to take this ss adapter off my nova chuck. I forgot how I got it on. To remove, do I mount it I the ss and then take a wrench and loosen the nova. TIA

There is a set screw that locks the Nova Chuck on the adapter - you loosen that set screw up (Not the one that locks the adapter onto the Shopsmith output shaft) and then the chuck proper unscrews off the adapter. Don't remember which way it turns - believe it is opposite to the normal direction of rotation.

thanks, that what I thought but for some reason my allen wrenches were not grabbing the set screw, maybe it was too late for me to be fooling with it, so that's why I wanted to check.

Is the set screw metric?

try all that, had to drill out the bad boy.

but got it done with no damage.

I am curious what the end of the set screw looks like, and how it prevented dinging the threads.(or did it NOT press against the threads)

In the Nova 3 Chuck for Shopsmith, the set screws that are part of the chuck itself are metric. Two different setscrews and the appropriate allen wrenches were supplied with the chuck. The two allen wrenches are 3mm and 4mm.

The set screw that secures the adapter to the drive shaft is the standard set screw used everywhere (almost) on the Shopsmith.

The setscrews (grub screws if you will) provided by Teknatool have cone tips.

I hope I can describe this well enough... Over the years I have fought many Allen wrench setscrews. Most of them on farm equipment. Some farm equipment with a lot of moving parts (especially combines) use a "lot" of setscrews. A lot of the time that farm equipment has sat in the weather for many years. In the case of things like manure or fertilizer spreaders it lives in a very corrosive environment.
When I had trouble getting them loosened I often resorted to modifying an Allen wrench to do the job. If the socket was rounded a bit (or just corroded to a loose fit I would find the next size bigger wrench and grind each flat at a longish bevel to where the very tip would just barely fit in the socket. Then I would clamp the Allen wrench tightly in a set of ViseGrips and drive it down into the socket. You have to have a feel for what you are doing or you will just split the socket out of the setscrew. I have used this many many times and it usually works pretty well.
Of course the very first thing to do is to be sure the tip of the wrench you are using is in good shape.
Another thing I always did to head off problems was to use anti-seize compound on any assembly that might see weather exposure.

nova supplies a tiny fiber dot so to speak that should go in the threaded hole before the setscrew thus protecting the threads
