May Go Missing

Post by dusty »

I may go missing today. I have been messing with a Firefox problem for days now. I am about to get more serious.

I plan to do a system restore yet today. I have never done a system restore so I don't know exactly what to expect. All that I have read seems to be high praise. I'm not yet convinced that Microsoft deserves that. We'll see.

BTW My problem has gotten to be more significant. I am now aware that I cannot read PDF, Word or Excel files that are on the system. I copied all the word and excel files to a flash drive to see if they are in tact and they are. I can read them on another computer..

Hope to be back soon.:)

Good Luck Dusty, we know with your knowledge and determination you will see this thru. Everything will work out just fine....
I keep finding little windows on this forum, that I don't really know what they do. So sometimes I experiment. Probably shouldn't do that, I know in my shop it can get me into trouble.

No need to call for help; at least not search-n-rescue.

I don't know how or why I am running right now and not all of the problems are resolved.

So much has changed and there are so many questions in my mind that I cannot even explain what has happened.

This has been a real group grope and I am the only member of the group.

The most significant symptom seems to be that if I click "Run as Administrator", some applications run that will not run otherwise.

The Administrators function is pass word protected but the User is not. I have logged on here without a pass word (therefore am not the Administrator).

Strange thing is that as the user I can access the word and excel documents of the Administrator.

It seems that something has gotten really screwed up in the Privileges and Procedures area and I am the only one who could have done this.

Maybe tomorrow will be better. I give up for now. I have been in front of this computer almost all day.

No, I am not sure of that! Can one ever be sure.

I am rather disciplined on what I do and where I go with this computer. I click on nothing out of sheer curiosity. I have all the firewalls up and I run a virus every day. I have only a few applications running on my computer that were downloaded (updates excluded).

No, I am not sure. But right now I am a happy though confused computer non-geek.

EVERYTHING seems to be working this morning and I have no idea what could have happened.

I suspected all along that the issue was "Rights and Privileges" but I have done nothing "deliberately" to alter those.

Dusty,
You are a brave man indeed. There is little else that gets me quaking to the core like a "Restore" of a Microswift "Operating" system.

FWIW: I have experienced similar weirdnesses involving rights and priviledges.

[We know, don't we, what political persuasion is harbored by the likes of Microswift programmers, when we observe that we pay enormous prices for a near-zero-cost operating system, installed on OUR PCs, only to be told that we have virtually no rights and few priviledges over its disposition.]

When this PC was new I was the Administrator and I could access and control anything I wanted to. Over time, withOUT any action taken by me or chosen by me, I've lost that control, for a large part. Same as what you've seen. The most irritating thing, I think, is to be told to check with my system administrator when logged in as the system administrator.

But I've had my fill, from DOS thru Win7 (XP on this one) of the infamous "Blue Screen of Death", and before I will undertake (appropriate term, somehow) an actual Restore I will purchase a new computer- probably a Mac.

I salute you!

And I am still mystified. Everything continues to work as expected. At least I think it is working as expected.

Dusty,
I've used system restore a number of times with success. I've also tried to used it a number of times, only to learn that the system restore was not enabled- or at least had nothing on the list to restore to.

About 4-5 years ago I gave up with Microsoft and did my best to use Linux. Back in the early 80's while I was stationed in England, I had to learn Unix to use this special computer system which allowed us to actually access a desktop computer files on a PC in Texas. We had a special name for the system which was something else- we now call it the Internet.

Well, I forgot anything I knew of Unix & Linux was a pain in the rear to use as I had too many files/programs which would only run on a Microsoft OS machine. I tried using dual-boot or multiple OS partitions, but that too became more of a pain than a benefit.

I finally said the heck with it & bought a MacBook. My wife works at a school and gets an educator's discount. I saved more buy purchasing a refurbished model along with a 3 or 4 year extended warranty.

What a pleasure it is to use compared to DOS/Win 95, 97, et al.. Operating system upgrades cost only $29.99. One thing about the MacBook I don't care about compared to a Dell notebook is the keyboard. Apple does not manufacture a user replaceable keyboard. In addition, the key caps they use will wear down and you end up with a clean key cap which is not good for a 2 or 4 fingered typist. Plus whenever I needed help, I would speak to someone within the 48 states and never be told I had to reformat & reinstall the OS as had happened numerous times with Dell products.

Before retiring, I worked with programmers from MIT and one time in a meeting, someone new suggested using a Windows OS--- it was the first time I ever saw a room of geeky PhDs ever want to roll on the floor laughing.

The most frustrating thing is I don't know the keyboard shortcuts like I knew on a Microsoft OS system. But the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages IMHO. Good luck!
