Dado Blade Use

Is it OK to use the dado blade without the outside blade on? I was wanting a 3/4 dado, and after about 5 tries I used all chippers and some shims but not the outer blade and had a good fit. I just had 3 short dado's to make.

What kinda edge did the chipper create?:rolleyes:

It was smooth and flat.

I guess it must have worked but it is hard to understand how one outside blade and all chippers would give you the 3/4" but both outside blades and some combination of chippers and shims would not.

How wide are your chippers?

Aaah, maybe you don't have a complete set of chippers. That would not be hard for me to understand since I don't have a set of shims.

Wrong Arbor? Threaded shaft too short?

3/4 on the arbor is still 3/4 regardless of the type of 'inserts'.

Smooth edge greatly surprises me. The chipper must have a non-tapered side.

I have a Freud 8'' Dado Set. It has 5 chippers and about 6 shims. One of the chippers is thinner that the other 4.

Should work with chipper on one side - maybe a chipper on both sides - I wonder????

I'm thinking that my wobble dado blade has only one tooth per revolution on both sides of a dado. Sides always come out smooth.

P.S. The sides of the outside tooth are never vertical. The top of each tooth is tapered in order to give a flat bottom on most size dados.

I agree with Heathicus.

It work for me. The chippers are flat on the side.
