Mrhart, how do you hollow the bowls on your spoons? I've been trying to find a way that is not time-intensive.

mrhart wrote:Here is my first attempt at blocks for the grandkids. Maple was the wood choice for this and unfinished for the kids. I got some oak plywood for the boxes but didn't like it, it splintered easily and didn't even really have a nice surface to start with. This was sort of time consuming but I became friends with my table saw and my disk sander. :)

Just exactly how hard is it to get all of the pieces back in the box as shown in the last picture? Seems like a good puzzel in attdition to a great set of blocks.

For friends and family I have created the following:

These are "bridge boxes" that will hold bridge playing card decks, score pads, and pencils

These are the bases of four tea chests (don't have a picture of them with the lids attached)

These are cocktail napkin holders

And these are candy boxes (one bound for Germany).

Now it feels kind of funny not having a project of some kind on the workbench.

Merry Christmas All!

These are place "cards" my wife and I made for for Christmas dinner, (I cut and sanded them, the wife burned the names, and year on the back and added the screw eyes and ribbons). They show the guests where to sit and then they can take them home and use as ornaments for next Christmas.

Ron:

Nice idea! I wish I could be so creative.

Sixteen expected for dinner later today so I will have to wait until next year to "steal" your idea.:)

Merry Christmas .

I posted these in another thread, but will post them here too. I made three sets of dominoes from maple, along with three boxes (two from cherry, one from maple).

I had planned to make all 3 boxes completely different, but just ran out of time. After making one, it was easier to just go into "production mode" on the other two and make them the same. The cherry blotched a little, but I just didn't have time to fight it. I need to get started earlier next year!

I've tried a number of methods. Now I'm using the Proxon Angle Grinder (Merlin) from King Arthur Tools to cut and shape, then the pump sleeve shaped like a gumdrop in the ER drill press mode to sand. Handsanding is the only way from there to finish them off.

Its not hard, I made the box with a little "slop". The blocks are based on 3/4" thick and 1-3/4" increments. So, 1-3/4 long, 3-1/2 long, ect. That way they will always fit one way or another. The grandkids loved them and enjoyed putting them in and out of the box as much as playing with them.
