No - you pound it from the end with the larger hole and it comes out the back side and it shouldn't bend. I can't remember if it matters if the SS is in the horizontal or vertical position when you do this. if you use the correct size pin punch then it drive right out flawlessly and pop out the backside (hence the recommendation to have something to catch it so it doesn't take off across the floor).

Ok. Just to be clear we're talking about the same part, here's a picture. This is the back side of the pin. You can see it sticks out of the hole. This is before trying to punch it out. It's still flush with the outside. So if I punch it, it looks like it will just hit the aluminum and get stuck. Maybe someone replaced the original with a longer pin?

Ok. The hole in the base on the backside of the roll pin where you've inserted the allen wrench; did you drill that or was it already there? Mine has no hole. If I punch the pin from the outside, the pin is just going to hit the aluminum.

The hole should be there!

Yours appears to not have it.(yer not crazy after all!;))

You will have to drill it out. The tension pins are hard.

Start with small bits and work up to the point the pin is 'removable'.

Once the tension pin and the hinge pin are removed, do drill the missing hole. It can be drilled from the outside 'only'.

Last thing you want to happen is a broken bit in there!

I had one foot out the door when I posted the pix. I did not recognize your pix at that time.

I am a little crazy, but there's no hole.

I'll try drilling it out tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

The base and carriage are clearly from a greenie. Unless Shopsmith just painted copper over green.

One caveat! Make sure the drill bits stay centered. You do not want to be drilling the base or the hinge pin to get the tension pin out.

It looks like the previous owner tried punching the pin out with with a screw. The screw is stuck in there and I can't drill it out. I tried using a drill press and the bit just slipped and started chewing into the aluminum. I'll have to figure something else out. In the meantime I'm bidding on a new base on ebay. Fingers crossed.
