Browsers

Post by Ed in Tampa »

Dusty brought up a problem that he is having with a browser and that set me to wondering why people use different browsers. I have heard people say this one is faster or this or that but they always seem to have a cavite like I still use X because Y does not always work on some web sites.

I have a problem now with Target.com and IE8. When I go to the Target website I get the message my browser is not supportted yet IE8 is listed in their list of supportted browsers. Since I can't even get into the target site there is no way to report this problem to them. So I just don't shop Target.

I have the similar problem with Google play at the check out. I do everything I want to do using IE8 but at check to purchase my products (a book)I get your browser isn't supportted. I talked to Google and of course their fix was for me to use Chrome. My fix was not to buy anything from Google play.

All that said my understanding is IE9 and I assume 10 are said to blow the competition off so I wonder why are people using anything else.

I have IE8 on my computer and not IE9 or IE10 because it runs Windows XP and the later versions of IE will not work. I had to use IE for an online class I took because they were running old applications on their site that the newer browsers no longer supported otherwise I only use it to check Windows Update.

For my browsing I use Chrome as I like its speed and lower memory usage. My wife likes Firefox, but I find it uses too much memory and slows down the longer I am online. Of course they just updated it to version 18 today so I may give it a try again.

To me it's just not that much of an issue which browser I use as I will use which ever one I need to use that lets me do what I want to do. It one doesn't work, I switch to another.

'MikeG' has the answer. Just have several browser's available - if one doesn't work (as happens very occasionally) then try the other. There are a variety of browsers available - Firefox (which I use as my primary), Google Chrome and a couple of others (I think). The other thing you might try is to erase your brower's 'History' (i.e. the record of cookies, sites visited, etc) as something there could be goofing things up.

I use Safari and if I have any issue, I will then go to Firefox. Often times the problem isn't with my computer/browser, but a problem on a server or something else. I also have Google Chrome which I've only used once. I heard Chrome keeps track of too much of my web surfing. Is that true? I don't know.

I gave up Microsoft operating systems just because. I tried different versions of Linux and it was too much trouble. So I bought a MacBook and that solved many problems I used to have with Windows.

One thing about Macbook operating systems is an upgrade goes for $29 or so. Can't beat that. Apple gets you up front when you buy a MacBook, but then is much easier on operating systems. My MacBook has never locked up or had a 'blue screen of death.'

I have a few different e-mail addresses from yahoo. The reason is I have them is to give out
to places that I don't want to receive clutter in my regular e-mail. Therefore I have the problem
of logging on to them and my browser remembering name and pass so I use different browsers for each.
That's one reason to have multiple browsers another is to check web designs for compatibility if you do that.
The bonus is having a back up when you get a site that don't like the one your using.
I have IE, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. All around I prefer Chrome the only problem is a very very
seldom problem of it displaying an image a bit grainy.
