I absolutely hate talking on the phone too. So, really, I don't view my phone as a "phone" but a pocket computer that I can use as a phone when necessary.

How are you doing this? I was told that contrary to what is implied in the TV commercials you must have an existing Data plan onto which you can add a tablet for $14.99 by the Att store.

I do have a touch screen which I like. We share 550 mins with AT&T for 3 phones and have never gone over, and have roll over mins in the bank. My wife does most of the talking. Our son and I don't talk much. Our bill is about $80.00 a month for 3 of us.
What phone do you have. I went to the ATT Store and all the phones they showed me that have touch screen also required data plans.

This is going to come down to what you want to do with your phone and the various new forms of communication a smart phone and/or tablet gives you.
If you want to a lot of communicating on social networks and web browsing, I'd recommend a tablet over a smartphone unless your young and have really good vision.

If you want to keep up with email and texting, a smartphone isn't bad. Games and other entertaining apps - again it depends on what you want.

For my smartphone needs, I got a no contract plan from http://www.consumercellular.com/ and get by with the lower level of voice and next-lowest data/text plan and pay about $35 a month for my service. If my needs go up one month I can adjust the plan up and then back down the next month. I don't talk on it much and do more texting than anything so this works good for me.

Then for the tablet, AT&T has a no contract tablet plan for $14.99 a month for 250 meg a month, which works for me as I'm usually near a WiFi source and use that 95% of the time. I use my iPad a lot for email, social networking, and showing off the things I make and sell, so this works great and the Celluar option is only there in case I need it while not in WiFi range.

There must be something I'm missing because AT&T told me the $14.99 was to add an tablet to an existing data plan.

Do you know the carrier for consumer cellular? That really interests me.

I looked at their phone choice and I see they support the Iphone 3 I wonder if I got a 4S or 5 iphone whether it would be supportted.
How about a Galaxy 3?

My cell phone (an old Nokia) died last week. It's with Trac-fone. I'm seriously considering not replacing it. I have a phone (with a rotary dial) in the shop. I don't text and my two laptops work just fine. I have a third laptop that I'm seriously considering for use in the shop.

I just called AT&T corporate store after much humming and awling they finally said yes I could buy a Ipad 3G and get a date plan for $14.99 for 250 meg. Non corporate store stuck to it guns this was only for adding to existing plan.

I use my Verizon smart phone as a hot spot for when I can't access WIFI for my laptop while I'm on the road. I have a Verizon Galaxy 7.7 tablet which I use at work to access everything they block that I need access to. I have their new data plan where you can connect up to 10 devices to one data plan.

I have aSamsung Flight II. I have had it all most two years now. You might try one of the outlet stores they have different phones that the AT&T store don't have. I got mine and my sons at Sam's.
