I don't think you can beat Straight Talk for talk, text and data at $45 a month. While they do say it's an unlimited plan, you need to read the fine print regarding restrictions on usage.
They have a couple of phones that run on the Verizon network. One being the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim. If you go to the Straight Talk web site and enter your zip code, it lists which phones will work in your area. Some of the phones run on the Sprint or T-Mobil networks, but the phones that include in their description a map of the continental U.S. almost entirely in red are the phones that work on Verizon.

That matches what we have been told.
There is a number on the face of the package at the bottom left and the last digit tells which network it uses. V = Verizon, S = Sprint etc.

Back to Android phones, my prepaid plan is with T-Mobile. Like others, I use free WiFi spots at fast food spots and such. Some of the tools I use are Memo pad (rather than having a bunch of post-it notes getting lost), grocery lists and project lists. All free apps. It's easy to photo your projects and email/message them.

We have a home phone with an answering machine that takes 90% of the calls. We also have one mobile phone that rings when it receives a call. The mobile phone (sprint) is usually turned off and sits in the kitchen getting charged. We turn it on and carry it with us when on the road.

Forgot to tell about our first cell phone. It weighed about 9 pounds - mostly battery weight - and was carried by a shoulder strap or a handle on the top. The speaker was integral to the case and the mike resembled one from the 1960 two way radios. We got it to carry in our motor home. It even came with an external antenna and a strong suction cup.
Needless to say - we haven't tried to keep up with the newer technology, but still use our newer cell phone in the same way as the older one.
