Had an ouchie today. No I didn't saw off three fingers or an arm or anything. No power tools were involved. No sharp blades. No avalanches of a jumble of tools and supplies.
I was picking up a very rough old board (that I should have thrown away a long time ago but couldn't) from the floor and putting it on a rack. It was about 8' long and as I slid it on the rack I (too) quickly brought my left hand back for another bite and found this nice split out place on one corner that was sticking out a half inch. Really a very minor injury but there must be a real abundance of nerve ends in that section of skin web between your hand and thumb.
Now I didn't fall to the floor in a pool of blood and tears but it took every single syllable of my best vocabulary to keep from it. I don't know just how deep it went but from the feel of it I half expected the end of it to be sticking out of my elbow. Dang that hurt. I wasn't really listening to my wife when I went upstairs for a scrub out and band-aid but I think she said something about flames coming up the stairway for a while.
Who would have thought such a small hole could have hurt that bad. All better now. I poked a stiff hay stem into the palm of my hand wrestling with a couple of bales yesterday. It didn't hurt anything as bad as this splinter today.
I may be forced to write myself a prescription for a week of uninterrupted shop time for recovery...

I'm thinkin' sometimes those little splinters have stinger splinters along the edges. Yep - they hurt! Also, sometimes difficult to get all of the wood out of there. It may take a week to fester enough that you can cut it out. That won't hurt a bit!
Octogenarian's have an earned right to be a curmudgeon.

Francis, I clean stuff at work, for my job. I work in a "dented can" store.
Couple years ago, I was cleaning out the sink, with a bare hand, and hit a piece of glass, sitting in the drain screen, with my second (insult) finger. Cut the finger, (and that nerve) rather substantially.
Yes, it healed up, but there is still a tender spot, where the nerve end, ended up. The tip still tingles a bit, now.
Eye, ye, ye… I was writing a response and just went to open something with a knife and sliced my index finger open. Ouch! No expletives. I made sure to clean it out as Momma is sleeping & I shuldn't be making a pizza this time of night!
One Greenie, Two Mark 7s,Three 510s and much more…
Funny you mention this type of wound. I was working on my buddys jeep. Reached under the sway bar linkage and sliced my left thumb on the side facing your body, even with the cuticle about 1/4 inch long. Damn that hurt. Quick survey of the wound, nothing still in it and kept working. It's wasn't pain that got me, but the overwhelming amount of blood. I couldn't believe that this little thing kept on like it did. I had blood on tools, the floor, everywhere. Bandaid, cloth wrap etc. I must have cut this enough for a stitch but I just couldn't believe it. It's the little ones that get you.
A couple of years back I was drill my trunnions per Dusty's directions ( I think it makes it Dusty's fault ) and the thing broke lose and spun around and smacked my thumb.
To this day I have pain in the joint where the thumb joins the hand. Right now it feels fine but the wrong move and it is pain that makes you want to cry.
Now when I drill I have a clamp and a back up clamp and I'm trying to learn to keep all parts of my body away from the smack zone on my SS in drill press mode.
