I got an envelope from this organization today. It is based in Washington D.C. My wife asked what it was and I said it was probably some organization that had differing views than the ones held by the present administration. She said, "No it's not. The envelope says, To the contrary (my name). It's not the name of the organization. Even in Washington they know you are contrary.
I said, "That's the name of the organization."
She said, "No, they know you are contrary and they addressed it to you specifically and contrary is an adjective, not a noun."
"That's ridiculous," I said.
"See, you're being contrary."
"Now you are being contrary," I countered.
"No, you're the one who is being contrary. It's not addressed to me. They don't even know who I am. It is addressed to the contrary one in this house. You."
I could tell where this was going so decided I'd better be going. Spent most of the afternoon doing yard work, which was not how I planned to spend it. But, things don't always go as planned. To the contrary.
