I recently 'acquired' some 'new' stuff. The ad said 'shopsmith', 'horizontal saw' and sander - 125$.

A phone call did not help find out what it all was.

Not knowing what it was I considered making a lower offer depending upon what it actually was. I thought it might be a RAS or a Shopsmith 2000.

When I got there, it turned out to be a Power Station, Band Saw, Strip Sander and a drum sander.

I gave him his asking price and smiled all the way home.

I did that even after he told me if it did not sell he was taking it to the pawn shop.

It was his grandfather's and he just wanted it out of his way!

He had the original catalog from which it all was purchased. He commented that it was expensive. I said it is even more so today!

I did not have the heart(or lack of one) to take unfair advantage of him.

Copy that. I stumbled on a kid who wanted his dead grandfather's stuff out of the garage so he could park his car. I got a new looking 10E, a Southbend lathe which I sold & now wish I kept, along with a huge inductive soldering machine. I ran out of space. A friend of mine did his apprenticeship at the Philly shipyard on the lathe and he forgot more about it than I would ever learn. I wasn't interesting in having metal chips along with wood. Too much for me to have to learn. I had to rent a truck with a lift to get it all & ended up
selling all but the 10E and I kept some special tools.

I've been pretty fortunate in that I wasn't really wanting anything & have purchased things as they came my way. I had to finally say no mas.
