Nova G3 Lathe Chuck Package

Turns out mine did arrive yesterday - the mailman stuck the oz behind something on the porch and I didn't see it until this morning when I was heading out the door...so glad it's here but haven't had a chance to open the box. As for the rest of my order, which is coming from SS...not sure where it is. TheFedEx tracker makes it seem like they passed it off to USPS, which would be a first for me

eartigas, dgale, kbuzz et al; I am pleased to hear that ya'll got your Nova G3 Chucks but what I am interested in now is whether or not Teknatool and Shopsmith have gotten their act together.

Did the chucks each come with the correct adapter?

I just got it out of the box this morning...I'll head out to the workshop and make sure the adapter fits on the quill shaft later this AM. I did like how the box included both the Nova and SS logos :-)

I believe I have the correct adapter. Mine came with a ISNS.

One thing;
The instructions provided with the Nova chuck indicate that a "fibre wad (NS1000) needs to be placed under the "Grabscrew" (set screw) used to secure the adapter to the chuck. The problem is, with the fibre wad in place, the height of the set screw interferes with the Nova Key. I have it well tightened down but it still rubs on the end to the key. To prevent the interference I had to file down the protrusion of the set screw. Not much, but still.
Note; Not a big deal.

Methinks the screw was not tightened sufficiently. I would think when 'new' the fibre needs to be 'compressed' to shape itself to the adapter threads. JMHO

If that not be the case. I would have filed the 'inside' end of either 'the wad' or the screw.

Also not a 'big' deal!;)

By my way of thinking, the real test of whether or not it is the right adapter is whether or not the set screw is set at an angle to mate with the taper on the drive shaft and that a shopsmith allen wrench can be used to tighten it (the later being the least important).

And 'NOT' a metric size as well! IIUC

Set screw definitely appears to have a slight angle to it...I'll have to go get my SS allen wrench to know for sure but it looks to be the correct size as well.

Yeah, you got the adapter that makes it a Shopsmith special. I am pleased to see that. Teknatool and Shopsmith have now demonstrated that they "got it together". Now I hope they keep it together. I hope everyone else got the same adapter.

Dusty- I had the exact same thought.

kbuzz- Do you have the set screw on the tapered part of the arbor? It's supposed to be designed to fit tight up against the aluminum end of the quill and the set screw should be on the tapered part. That is the reason the ISNS is much larger than the IFNS. The IFNS doesn't permit the set screw to make contact the 3 degree taper on the arbor as I understand.

Is it possible the wrong set screw was included? My set screw is 9mm (~.35") in length. The threaded adapter hole appears to be 12.5mm in length. I can see several threads when I have the "grub" screw at the bottom of the threaded hole. Excuse my terms as my background is in electronics. Something doesn't seem right as the fiber washer is not very thick (I didn't measure it).

Good luck. This is going to be a never ending issue for some people who purchase their G3 kits from sources such as Ebay, Amazon, etc. other than SS or Teknatool/Nova and Woodworker Specialties. I went on Amazon and checked one night and saw two different adapters labeled for the Shopsmith. One pic was a IDNS adapter; another was labeled 5/8" plain arbor- IFNS…

Hopefully these are drop shipments from Teknatool in Clearwater & someone there might catch the end-item application if it is specified. I just hope no one gets injured in the meantime. I learned that in 1955, a guy was turning a chalice on the Shopsmith and the way tubes moved and the chalice ended up hitting him in the head. Here's a link for anyone interested:

If anyone recalls that epic length thread on the G3 from last year, someone included a copy of the sheet included from Teknatool/Nova which was included with the adapters they sent free of charge to people who received the IFNS adapter with their G3 kit. Teknatool stated it addressed a safety issue. I wonder if this specter of the past was the reason for the 'complimentary' ISNS adapter? I suppose the cost of one potential lawsuit was enough to motivate the company to ensure no one gets injured when a G3 chuck flies off. That would really hurt.
