Slowly getting organized (sort of).

This store shelf unit was intended as a wood rack for wood about 4' to 6' long but after I finally got it on casters it sort of filled up with other stuff. I like it well enough for this stuff that I think I am going to keep it for this kind of use instead.
The caster mounts stick out a little at the corners the way I did them but I wanted to be sure that it could be loaded heavy on one side if need be and not become tippy when moving like it could be if I put the casters back underneath of the base.

It is really helping getting so much stuff on casters. I just told Diana that I may have to replace all of the casters within a year from wearing them out rearranging the shop almost daily.

My very first basement shop I started back in 1963 when we got married several houses ago, was easier to layout. The bench went "there" (after I built it). That was the only place where it would fit plus I put the vice on the right end and that end was next to a window about 3' feet high and 5 feet wide and it gave a lot of free light. The power tools all went... No, wait, I didn't have any power tools yet.

My first tool with a cord on it was a 1/4" drill. The second was what then we called a saber-saw (now sometimes called a jigsaw). Next was a Skilsaw type saw. Understand that these corded tools were each acquired a year apart. I did have a very small number of handtools.
Things were tough at that time and my first off-farm job didn't pay much.

Dude:

I am clearly behind you on shop-organizing progress. Although in self-defense, I have withheld from the landfill a genuine U.S. made pre-HD tube-type TV cabinet on casters that is destined to become a customized SS accessory & SPT roll-around storage unit. It is built like a brick you-know-what.

But my real question is: How many circular saws does one guy need?

I bought several wire metal storage rack systems from Costco. I just have to get stuff sorted out. Cold weather has me 'frozen'.

The top shelf on the other side is all routers...

I go to a lot of yard sales.

Remember that farmer's hobby (like many of us here) is the tools and the shop. Not necessarily wood working.

Today while I was shuffling some stuff around for the 400th time this month

I was reminded of just how much space it takes to turn a Mark V around end for end. While it only takes 6' x 2' to park a Mark V it can be sometimes surprisingly hard to find a clear 7' circle (about what it really takes to turn one end for end) in a still cluttered shop especially if the shop has some center post.

Then I moved the old Mark VII... Being a foot shorter it was interesting to note just how much easier it was to turn around in the same space.
This helps convince me to make my two restored Mark V's into shorties.

It is slow (well, OK, I am slow

) but things continue to fall into place.

My garage/shop had storage cabinets that used to be the kitchen cabinets in the house prior to the Northridge Earthquake. That's when the house was red-tagged, came down, and was rebuilt with the old cabinets in the garage. As time passed the garage started being use for other things besides MY woodworking (not my idea, but stuff happens). I am now in the process of tearing out the cabinets, replacing them with 21"deep shelving, moving the filing cabinets, and basically reclaiming my workspace. If it comes out wonderful I'll post pictures....if you don't see the pictures, never mind, it only looks fair.

If ya would quit 'rearranging' things 'falling' would speed up considerably!:D

Turn around????? Oh if only there were that much 'excess' space.

I do well to turn myself around!:rolleyes:
