10er casters
I had an extra set of 10er casters and have long wanted to have a little more mobility in my shop. While I love to be able to move my Smiths around, I have, from time to time, wanted the added flexibility of moving my workbench.
I looked at casters & realized that I really like the way the Shopsmith casters operate compared to others.
Since the 10er sets Mount vertically & they are able to lift the very heavy 10er, I figured I'd give it a try since the workbench legs were the right width for mounting.
I simply set them to the down position & placed a wooden paint stir stick under the wheels to set the height & put in 4 screws & some washers. Easy as that. They work great. I like the ability to move a bench around to adapt to the needs a particular project.

The one in the background is a Sjobergs bench that I got at a local woodworker's estate auction. It was originally open underneath & I enclosed it for storage & to add weight.camerio wrote:And what about those benches, where did you find these ?
The one I put the casters on also came from a local (different) guy's garage sale. It was originally just the top & 4 legs with lower shelf. (It did come with the vises which is mostly why I bought it) I added the drawers which were old ones from another sale...I do like to stop at sales... and enclosed it as well, mostly to add weight & stability.

I also have an extra set of 10er casters. Mine have the old metal wheels.
Did you replace your wheels? If so, where did you get yours?
I have been planning on building a rolling cabinet to fit under my shopsmith. Thanks for the idea of using the old 10er casters. I was concerned that they might not do the job for a heavy cabinet.

The 'current' small caster wheels are the same dimensions as the older steel wheels.

Wheels
I did not change the wheels. They are steel, but I'm not sure if they're original, although they look that way. My bench is pretty heavy, and that worried me, however, I tried lifting the headstock end of one of my 10er's & it felt heavier, so I figure I'm okay. Those old machines are really heavy. I don't know the actual weight. Does anyone here know?

200# and counting????
P.S. IIWY, I would 'replace' them with the larger ones if they should ever need replacing.

For me, with a smooth basement floor in the shop, I probably would not. I'm comfortable with whatever the composition is of the newer wheels as it applies to the weight of the Mark 5, but I like the steel for the heavier 10er, and also for my bench in case it's even heavier.JPG40504 wrote:200# and counting????

Not sure the metal wheels are all that 'stronger'. The early greenies all had metal wheels as well. Methinks they were 'abandoned' by bean counter issues.trainguytom wrote:For me, with a smooth basement floor in the shop, I probably would not. Was a time when all caster wheels were either steel or wood.
