This is the second tray. Debating with myself whether to leave the bottom where it is to conceal what is in the bottom or conform it to the rest of the tray. Also, shown here are the small support that will hold the tray off the bottom without taking up much space in the bottom of the box.

Here is almost what it will look like once glued and inserted. The little pill bottle contains sanding dust. This dust will be used to make a mixture with glue to conceal defects.

This is one of the finest parts of the Shopsmith to me. I never put the box more than half way down the sanding disk because of all the resistance and stress. Much more, even at the slowest speed, it can throw it out at the user or shatter into pieces which in turn will fly back at the user. The nice thing is to advance the quill gently so as not to cause the box to build up too much stress and resistance. The object here is to get the top and bottom edges straight so that the bottom will glue up nicely. Also, the lid will simply sit on the box and look professional.

Will be back when the felt is in place. Thanks for watching.

Once the sanding gets 'close' take the sanding disk off the quill and pass the workpiece over it by hand. The disk is a pretty good 'flat' surface.

Thanks for that tip, JPG. I had not thought of it. I did see on this forum once where someone put the SS in drill press mode and sanded the object that way to create a flat surface.

Well, started the new phase of the box. Just to catch up, here is a pic of both trays.

By leaving the bottom out on the second tray it gives the illusion of concealment. I'm not good with a hot glue gun and fabric. If I had the funds, would have flocked this. But, as a retired civil servant, have to stay on my budget.

Since the top and bottom panels continue to split, will cut off 1/4" sheets of the parts removed from inside the box and glue to the bottom for reinforcement. After putting that in place, it is still splitting. May have to resort to something else. Before gluing, had to put the modified bottom under box to trace for trim for tray supports. Got them shaped and glued and now chalk to make an image transfer to fabric.

Image transferred and this will guide the cut on the larger side. Afterward, will start with a couple spots of hot glue on one of the wing tips while holding back the fabric. Will glue sufficiently to hold it in place. It will fit inside of box and after lining the sides, will look very much like one piece of fabric. It's going to be a couple of days before I return. I've decided to discard the top and bottom panels. They continue splitting. I've never had a glue joint to pop loose before. So, will reach into my stash and resaw new panels and hope to get the grain to come close.

As you saw in the last post, the bottom kept cracking on me. I suppose I didn't put enough pressure on the clamping. So, got an 8 inch board from the same tree, cut it on both sides with the tablesaw. Then finished the cut with a hand saw.

Used board on right and sanded it smooth and to about 3/8" thickness. I find that the 1/8" blade I used to cut out the pattern flexes cutting through all that wood. So, turned the box upside down and traced the outline onto the board. Then turned the box right side up and traced the bottom of the pattern. Marked the top pattern with "T" and the bottom with "B".

Results of bandsaw cutting. Grain and color won't match but this is a CYA position at this point.

This is to show how close it will fit. Once sanded for fitting to the box, will glue, wait until glue has set hard and then sand outside to make it all look like it goes together. Then will line the inside like one of the drawers already posted.
You can make any pattern your imagination will produce. If you have to, you can also glue boards together, even putting them in an arrangement to make interesting patterns in the box and drawers. I hope this helps someone who wishes to do this. Will be out of town to welcome 2nd granddaughter. Will return and show finished product.
Thanks everyone for stopping and looking.

Looking great already. Like the butterfly design. Can't wait to see the finished band saw box. Surely a great gift idea for the ladies.

Have the bottom glued on and sanded. If I could have used the original pieces, it would have looked very much like it all went together. This will do for an 8 year old, I hope. Anyway, here's more pics.

I continued with the usage of the insides I had cut to reinforce and stabilize the lid. I must be very heavy handed in clamping as this inside part just simply disintregrated as the clamps tightened on the glue. This keeps the lid in place. You can see a small crack that developed in the new piece as I was clamping these together.

This is pretty much how it fits after shape sanding. Except for the wood grain, it appears to be much like one unit.

This is a view with the first piece of fabric glued inside. Will now line the sides and finish the ring tray. Then will make a handle for the lid.

Here is a view from a side to show how to sand it so that it looks much like one unit. Again, the grain needs to match for a better look. And, for those with sharper eyes, you can see that I need to hand sand with 200 grit for a final touch. Thanks for looking.

Final pics and post

Post by swampgator »

Finally, got it completed. Worked a couple other projects in while this one was in progress. Modified the ring tray with putting an insert to make the bottom level with the top of the tray. Then cut out a piece of foam rubber to fit the vacancy, then cut that into strips so it would look like a ring holder. So, here are the pics.

Coated with two coats of clear lacquer after applying info about the tree and who it was made for. Sorry, didn't make pic of that. Message inscribed on bottom "This cedar planted as a tree in about 1952/3 by Clara Andrews Bramlette with her dad, James Edward Andrews of 9440 North Loop Road, Pensacola, FL. This box made especially for Brianne Bramlette. U. S. A."

Posted this to show what can be made with a Shopsmith bandsaw. Hope this motivates someone to do something out of the normal with the hopes to see something posted that is more creative. Please be safe and keep all your digits, eyes and good health. My optometrist just told me about his dad being a shop teacher and one day, he was explaining to the students to keep the blade guard down. As he swept his hand toward the running blade, the saw removed his 4 fingers.

Thank you, Dave. Just hoping to show what can be done with a chunk of wood that no one sees use for. Hoping to see other posts of creative ideas. Thanks for your support.
