Finding grinding wheels for SS Wheel Guard II?!?!!

Just purchased a new SS Grinding Wheel Guard II and the 60 grit 5" wheel that is offered on the website. I received the guard and it looks great! However the wheel was on backorder. It has been several months now and I contact SS directly and they have no answer to the release of the grinding wheel..it may be discontinued!

I went searching for any 5" wheel by 3/4" to 1" thick with a 5/8 hole for the arbor, and it seems to not exist!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'll be watching this closely. I suspect that you are out of luck until Shopsmith finds a supplier.

The 5" wheel with a 5/8" arbor is atypical.

In the past I have purchased an aluminum oxide 6" wheel, mounted it to the shopsmith arbor without the 5" guard and used my diamond dresser to trim it down to 5" to fit the SS setup. Make sure you wear your safety glasses and face shield while doing this and cover the SS way tubes too. A vacuum, collecting the dust would be good too. Once trimmed, it will work for you until you wear it out. You'll have to set up a tool rest for your dresser. I use a Tormek BGM-100 mount but you could make something out of wood pretty quick.

It might be cheaper, in the long run, to buy a new bench grinder.

I have often wondered why Shopsmith doesn't modify their guard so a 6" or 8" wheel can be used.
I suspect it is a liable thing. Since it is possible to mount the wheel on the SS and run it at a much higher RPM than the max specified for most wheels.

By using a unique size SS was able to insure no one would be able to mount a wheel that could not stand the max RPM of the SS.

If you turn down a wheel or use one without the guard make sure you never exceed the max RPM stated on the wheel. If you do be prepared to pick really nasty scrapnel out of your hide.

Here is a source that may have what you want. You'll have to use a reducing bushing to bring the shaft hole from 1" to 5/8".

Yea I think I'm going to return the wheel guard. I'm just going to have to grin and bear it and just use a 6 inch wheel with no guard! I don't have the space in my basement for a bench grinder. Too bad they don't make a guard that can accept a typical size grinding or wire wheel. Its just not smart!

There is a wheel guard template in ptwfe that you can probably modify to accept 6" grinders
