Mark V Pre or Post 1986 Worktable

Post by woodhead »

How do you determine if your Mark V 510 worktable is pre or post 1986? The table was purchased on ebay sometime back when upgraded from a 1955 500 to a 510; and I am looking to update to a 520 system. The upgrades on shopsmith are listed as Pre or Post 1986, so how do you determine this. If I should purchase parts from ebay how do I insure it will all work together and align properly?

It has to do with the way the tubes are mounted to the table. I will post pictures of both designs, but I don't know which is which. Maybe the audience can help?

I think the first (cleaner table) is the early version. Notice the jack screw?

Side by side comparison. I think the left is the old and right is the new.

I found this old post by JPG:

Post 86 rails are secured to the tables by studs attached to the rails that pass through holes in the table front/rear and are secured by nuts with captive lockwasher. No holes in the rail.

The one on the right is the newer configuration but I do not know the time period of the change over. I also do not know why the date would be important. The tables are compatible regardless.

When you upgrade, and IF you have the new style 510 rails, would you be interested in parting with the 510 rails?

Thank you for the pictures, they answer the question very well, I made a search and didn't come up with answers. I suppose I didn't search the right area, anyway thanks for the post.

Dusty, the date may or may not be revelant but Shopsmith list two 510 to 520 upgrades, one is pre 1986 pn 555983 and then post 1986 is pn 555982. It seems to me that if you had the older table it would require modification to install the 520 rails w/ studs on it. Like maybe you would have to drill out the tapered screw holes. I do appreciate your post on my request and if I am wrong my apologies .

The older tables may be drilled to accept the studs that secure the rails. The holes on the newer tables are through holes. This may be the difference.

Joshh, I will keep you in mind when I do an update. I suppose you want the complete set of 510 rails.
