Bat House

Has anyone made a Bat House? I'd like to attract more bats to my property. A search of this site did reveal a set of plans at http://vbwhiz.isa-geek.net/plans/

Has anyone built this? Pics? Alternative designs?

I built a bunch with some cub scouts as a project for a badge. They were built from precut kits. Really they were very simple. Basically a box without a bottom. The boards were rough sawn on one side ( the interior of the box) I think so the bats could get a better grip.

Hi,

You can build them but it is another thing all together to have them move in.

Despite our having a bat house up for years the only thing that moved in were yellow jackets (only 1 year).

I might give it another try as I have the box packed away, a little clean up and fresh paint....

My build was based on the plans found in this pdf:

They are free and include squirrel houses, bird houses and of course a bat house.

I have had over 200 Eagle Scout projects at Lake Cascade. Over 30 of these were bat houses. When I monitored these structures, the "Rocket Style" was the most successful.

I made a couple many years ago. The bats never moved in? My recollection is I got plans from a book titled Woodworking For Wildlife.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know which plan I decide to follow, and whether we have any luck attracting bats.

Maybe there were insufficient dings on the inside surface.

Just a guess here, but perhaps JPG thinks you are trying to attract "dingbats"???

They need something to hang on to so a few dings might help. Yes to the dingbats reference.
