Ever seen a lithophane?

Post by curiousgeorge »

What is a lithophane or lithopane? It's a picture carved on an opaque material such as Corian, plastic or just about any material that can be carved on so that when a light is shown on the back the carving appears to be a photograph. This is my first attempt on a 5x7x1/4 inch piece of white Corian using my new CarveWright CNC machine. I was totally blown away by the outcome. This is a picture of Bruce Gipson, my neighbor and good friend who died last year. I am going to give it to his wife for a keepsake. The photo of the litho doesn't do justice to the way it looks in person.

That is really good. How do you get the different color like the eyes?

Joe, the depth of the carve determines the amount of light that comes thru. The deeper the cut the lighter it is.

Unlike not using protection with a saw, the deeper the cut the darker it is.
