Short on shop space? This might help.

Post by reible »

I can't take credit for the idea, it was sketched in my blue note book of projects to do some time. Details were none existant but you sort of have to make your own custom design anyway.

I should also mention that not everyone will benefit from this idea, it depends what things you have in your shop....

Thought maybe the time had come today to give this a try.

This is my prototype unit but I'm thinking it is close enough so it is 1 of 6.

So here we go.

If you happen to have say a work bench, tool cabinet or other fixed in place object that sets off the floor you might find this idea useful. Here I am looking at my workbench/storage unit.

Wonder what is under there? Me too. Hey nice old piece of wood!

Thing is I could store that with the wood and free up the space for something else. Enter the rolling drawer!

Here it goes, under the bench.

And all the way under!

Functional only on this build. If you have seen my recent post on the drill press table

https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=12661

I've been exploring more kreg pocket hole build ideas. This expands on that. This is a view of the bottom of the bottom. The material is 3/4" plywood and the front/back and sides are all attached with pocket hole screws.

I used a circle cutter to cut out a 2" wheel. A 1-1/4" washer is embedded in the wheel and a similar but free washer is between the wheel and the drawer. I used a lag bolt to attach the wheel just to keep it simple.

To keep the sides attached to the front and back a couple more pocket holes were used. The drawer is super sturdy, in fact way to sturdy for this project.... But really simple to build.

Another post coming.

The size of the drawer could be adjusted to about anything that fit. In my case I have 2 pretty much identical places where this can be used. The width is based on getting 3 of the drawers under each of the two places.

Height wise I left a bit more head room so I could roll in/out with the floor mat that is there. I also left room for a lid in case I feel I need to add one at some point.

The depth the drawer goes was also based on how much room I had under my equipment.

The wheels let the drawer clear the floor by a 1/2", again that was partially for the mat.

Next will be a few pictures showing the sizes.

What might go in the drawer? Put some tape in but I'm thinking I have a lot of other things that could go in there that would be more useful.

That is kinda like I did. I already had some shallow drawers left over from another project, Built them in under my Shopsmith for sanding disk paper and sand paper. Out of the way, and flat.

I have a few things to finish up on the model. First it needs a "foot" for the front so the it sets level. That will be a small block that is 1/2" thick.

For the front and back I'm thinking of adding screen door handles, those cheap ones I can get at a big box store.... The front one will make it easy to get in and out, the one in back will make it easy to pickup when and if that is needed.

I was happy enough with the design that I have cut the bottoms, front/backs and the sides. Still need more wheels and the hardware and some better weather. More rain! At least I was able to get two of my three rain barrels set up, more then likely full by now. If this keeps up I might be taking time for a hardware trip tomorrow.

This is a neat idea for some people, Ed and those people will probably thank you for this post. For me, those little cubby holes create a problem.

"Now where did I put that? I just had it yesterday! I know that it is here somewhere! It has to be; no one else has been in the shop".

My Dad used to claim he'd just "searched the entire shop" when he was missing something.

We knew that such a real search would have taken 2-3 weeks; there were thousands of nooks in that place!

Nice idea to use that space, Ed. I must say, though, I thought you were planning to store lead ingots. 24 Kreg screws in 3/4 in. plywood!
