That looks like fun! Wonder how many times it takes to get one that is stable enough to work, and a few other questions come to mind.

Most dangerous period in the turning is while it is still out of round. I was also amazed that he wasn't always wearing a face shield. You have to have a lot of specialized equipment to do turnings of this nature. I turned an 8 inch dia. log on my SS once making an urn to hold the ashes of a dear friend's father-in-law. The log was off of their farm where the urn was to be buried. It was a challenge.

Your right. Not so bad when you have the right equipment. Doubt the SS can handle something like that.

I fortunately do have a lathe that can handle something like that. My friends and I have made a few lamp shades. I have a 6-ft. boring bar that allows me to get deep inside a turning of this nature. And if you noticed his use of the light, that is very helpful. My boring bar has a light attached to it right next to the cutting tip, allowing the light to make the piece glow from the inside out. You have to turn in a very dark shop though.

Fun project to make if you have the right tools.
