Double Tilt Upgrade on Mark V 500

I ordered and received the double tilt upgrade when they went on sale in May 2011. Because my shop needed some changes I just this month installed the double tilt upgrade on my Model 500. Everything went fine until I started to change the two table posts. It turns out that the table post portion of the upgrade is designed for the 505, 510, and 520 models but not the 500 model. After some thinking I found a way and I am now able to do under table shaping on my 500 model using the original table system.

The two pins on each table post can be pushed through with a hammer and punch and will fall out through the center hollow posts. Make sure you do not lose any of the pins, because you cannot buy new ones. They are special tapered pins. Removing the old posts can be done by putting the table in a vice, using a large cresent wrench on the very bottom end of the post where there is a flat and then turning the post while pulling at the same time.

The new posts can them be pushed into the holes using a bar clamp. After ensuring that both new posts are inserted the exact same amount, and that the teeth are oriented in the proper direction, you drill using a 5/32' high speed steel bit. Just continue the pin holes that are already on the tie bar through the new posts. Then tap in the 4 pins that you took out in the beginning making sure you hammer on the same end of the pin you did originally. You will see the marks on the end of the pins made by the punch earlier.

You cannot order these pins from Shopsmith; they are not an orderable part nor is there a part number for them. They do not appear on the parts schematic for a model 500. An added benefit is you will notice that you now have more table adjustment available when using it in upright drill press mode because the new posts are longer than the originals.

I have added a 2 1/2 inch port for dust collection on the shaping fence for under table shaping or routing. The pictures are below.

Gotta ask, are the nuts on the shaper table clamps OEM? i.e. 3/16" screws but a 1/4" sized nut. The casting was designed for 1/4" square nuts. I assume when 1/4" screws with 5/32" hex heads became 'unavailable', the 3/16" screws were 'substituted'. My Mark VII(which precedes your model) has 'normal' 3/16" square nuts(not good!). The nuts need to be the same size outer dimension as 'normal' 1/4" square nuts.

I don't know what you mean by shaper table clamps. The table is the same as the main table used on the Mark V model 500. The shaper fence has a clamp on each end of it. They are held in place with a single socket head cap screw size 3/8"-16 X 1" which are OEM.

I see what you are asking now. The original fence before they added the red plastic rear guard used part number 503778 which is a 1/4-20 x 1-1/4 Cap Screw with part number 120372 Square Nut which is 1/4-20.

The red plastic rear guard is part of item 555140 Router/Shaper Guard Retro Kit which I bought when it came out. Included in that kit are replacements for those two parts, namely part number 514513 Socket head cap screw #10-24 x 1-1/2" and part number 514515 Square Nut #10-24. The outside dimension of the new square nut is the same as the old one but the hole and threads are smaller. They had to do this so the cap screw could fit through the hole in the plastic shield.

I believe another reason for the screw size change was the standardization that eliminated screws such as the original 1/4-20 with a 5/32 hex socket. 1/4-20 screws now have a 3/16" hex socket.

My Mark VII shaper fence apparently has the guard upgrade, but the nuts are 'normal' sized(smaller) square nuts which do not fit the shaper casting correctly.

I may need to 'make' a pair.

Taking any bets? 'Special'(non-standard versions of standard hardware) items seem 'NA' of late.

Both 514515 and 514513 are now 'findable'! We shall see if they have changed!:)
