I would stick the mystery part on the floor and sweep dust into it...

On the mystery part, I would second the suggestion that it is a surface planer dust chute. Reminds me of the dust chute on my old Dewalt 733.

I appreciate everyone's comments. I got several chuckles along the way and I did pay $20 extra for the shop notes. The dw733 hit the nail on the head. I googled it and found this which shows the same tabs as the one I have in post #15 http://lumberjocks.com/mafe/blog/33843 I'll probably adapt it to my Craftsman planer/molder because it comes closer to that than the Pro planer. I'll just have to break down and buy the kit for the pro planer.
