Vanity Project Teaser

Once I recovered from my shoulder surgery I began building a new vanity for our small bathroom. It is 25" wide and a bit taller than normal. In that our bathroom is very tiny I needed to design it with as much storage as possible. This first picture illustrates the finished project. Given that some of you seem to have the foresight to see beyond the face of a cabinet I offer this picture to challenge your imagination. How may drawers are built into this cabinet? Jim

Well, in addition to the three obvious ones, I'll bet that what looks like the usual dead panel in front of the sink is really the face of a shallow drawer. Perhaps even shaped to be full-depth on the sides. Or it might be a flip-down panel hiding multiple smaller drawers -- my guess would be six drawers in that scenario.

Got any more drawers hiding behind those cabinet doors?

Good guesses. The first picture here, shows there is one drawer behind the doors. I have always found the shelves under such cabinets a frustration as whatever is placed on them seems lost forever. The final picture shows the "TP" drawer where the kick plate is normally located. It holds a dozen rolls of toilet paper. The panel at the top is decorative. I did try to figure out drawers there and realized they would be far too small to be worth time to build or useable. So five is the correct answer. My buddy who installed the new floor and the cabinet commented that he has installed 100's of vanities but never before a piece of fine furniture. I am currently working on a new medicine cabinet and a cabinet for over the toilet. We are truly enjoying having a new and highly useable bathroom. Jim

Wow, you totally stumped me on the kick-plate TP drawer! I almost showed my wife, but realized just in the nick of time that such lunacy would immediately lead to an even bigger Honey-do list backlog.

I still gotta believe that you could fit a whole boatload of toothbrushes, Qtips, Chapsticks, Bandaids, soap bars, Neosporins, razor blades, etc. etc. etc. around the periphery of that sink.

But then you did mention something about a medicine cabinet.

I enjoy the expressions from folks who see the new cabinet. While designing and building the cabinet my wife expressed disbelief that it would work. Once in use her disbelief turned to joy. I am surprised at how often her friends have stopped by to see the Drawer. A word to the wise. My bride asked me a few days after completion if we need to increase the shop tool budget. It seems she sees new value in those items coming from my man cave. The medicine cabinet will also be very different as will the project that follows that one. Don't be shy about showing your bride the great ideas. Every once in a blue moon one will pay off in terrific dividends. Jim

So what you are telling me is, when it comes to bathrooms, it ain't about how big it is. It's how you use it!
