Couple of problems sheave loosening and Headstock play

1. This weekend I ran into the problem of the sheave plate that is next to the motor housing coming into contact with the housing. I took the spring off and found the screw/stud loose, I tightened it back up and re assembled everything. Later the next day the same thing happened with the plate hitting the housing, but the screw was still tight?! This time I left the spring and plates on the shaft and used a pulley puller on the top plate. Did this whole operation two more times through the course of the weekend. Any ideas as to why this is happening? The screw/stud is lock-tighted in place but the sheave plate is still coming loose what am I missing?

2. Next is a less annoying problem but one I would still like to address if I can. I was doing some finger joints with the table saw and noticed the blade comes in and out (like if I was drilling into something) with all of the screws and various tighteners tight. It doesn't move up and down just in and out a small amount. Is this a sign of a bad bearing, something else or is it normal?

1. I have found the fan sheave set screw has somewhat loosen causing the fan sheave to hit the metal plate and vibrate the plate loose. I use sheet metal screws to firmly attach this plate when I find any point loose. There should be at least 1/16"-1/8" spacing between the plate and the fan sheave. There is a metal sleeve between the front motor bearing and the fan sheave hub. The fan sheave hub must be firm againest this sleeve.

2. Yes, it could be a bad quill bearing. I have found the spindle knob can slip on the shaft allowing end play. You should be able to see if the shaft is moving by pushing and pulling on the shaft. Power off. There should be less than +-/002" end play on the shaft.

Hmmm sounds like that spacer that should be on the shaft isn't there at all :confused: That explains that problem I guess. The fan sheave slips down and acts like a brake, stops the motor and all from moving. Is that sleeve going to be a special order part or is there any chance they will have at the hardware store?

I will inspect that quill bearing when I get a chance, thanks for narrowing the problem down Bill
