Belt sander teardown???

I want to tear down the SS 48" belt sander to either clean the bearing and/or replace the bearing. I did a search on this website to no avail. The idler drum is very stiff and probably either the bearing need cleaning and/or replace, thanks

I know that is right, Bill. What I seem to be having a lot of frustration over the snap ring the holds the handle. There does not seem to be enough room to get the ring in the groove. I think, I messed up the drum because I hammered the copper brushing down just below the edge. It does not turn as freely.

Okay Guys, I have an 82' belt sander I torn to clean up so than the idler drum would turn easier. My problem is that I could not get the retainer ring back on because I could not get the idler drum knob to recess enough to get the retainer ring in the grove. I also have an 88' belt sander so after beating my head against a brick wall for two days decided to tear the newer one down to maybe see what the problem could possibly be. I've included some pictures for you to see but with everything the same the knobs seems to be different. I placed the 88' knob on the idler shaft I'm having problems with and it push in far enough to accept the retainer ring. I'm really not sure but the two knobs seem to be different. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it without having to buy an new idler knob, thanks. The first picture is of the older knob and the pictures of both knob the 88 is on the left in the first and on the right in the second picture. thanks again. By the way the 88 idler drum is flat on one side of the drum. Is that the way it is suppose to be? thanks.

Can you determine what is stopping the original knob from going on all the way? Any burrs on the knob or the shaft? i.e. around the snap ring groove? Do not overlook the tension release parts.

I looked again at the two knobs and the newer one seems to be deeper recessed than the older. I'm baffled here on this one. I'm thinking about calling Wes to find out if there is a difference in the two knobs. When I measure the recess in the newer knob there is about 1/8" difference. God only knows how that was put together at some time or another since 1982. Thanks in advance for any help here.
