Hi,
I am new to these forums and have tried to search for this problem but I am not quite sure what is causing this.
I have a 510 that is making a horrible grinding/buzzing sound when I approach the top speed of the headstock. I have tensioned the poly v and oiled the sheaves.
From reading the forums, I am thinking that it is one of four problems but I am not sure of what troubleshooting I should take to diagnose this.
1. The sheave spacer between the motor and floating sheave is worn.
2. The drive belt is worn out (I measure this at .55")
3. The fan sheave set screw is loose (not sure where this is)
4. The top speed is set to high.

As to #4, if you shut the machine off at high speed, the top of the belt should be between 1/16 and 1/8 inch below the edges of the floating and fan sheeve. Tis possible the control sheave is hitting the speed control(high speed stop adjustment incorrect).

The buzzing noise is from the motor drive belt rubbing the idler shaft. The control sheave moves too far from the idler sheave. I believe the buzzing is from the vane tips riding near the outside edge of the belt. Sometimes if the headstock is stopped at this speed, a worn belt will wedge under some of the vane tips and lock up the rotation. Resetting the high speed adjustment keeps the belt off the idler shaft. I found I could get over 6000 RPM on the quill shaft sometimes when I allowed the belt to just rub on the idler shaft. No real reason to want to do this, it just happen when pretesting a customer headstock.
