FWIW, IIRC, Dusty has made a shorty out of his 'second' Mark V.

Yes, I decided later to cut the tubes and make a shorty. I am satisfied with the results but I did not gain a lot of floor space by doing it. I did retain enough length to go to saw mode; however, I have not used it that way except for initial concept verification.

Interesting, but it appears that it's a mini. It does't have room for the table and the sawing function is not mentioned. If it can be had for free, I would suggest those that qualify for free status order it. A mini can sure be handy and free is a good price, even if you pay for shipping!

Yeah like to have one free but you have to purchase a Mark7 to get it.

Don't be such a cynic. For that price they also give you (1) plans to build a wooden top to mount it on and (2) the hardware to screw your old head rest and base arm to the wooden top you build with those plans.

I must admit, if I had the money and inclination to do the upgrade, I think I might do this rather than sell off the old headstock and base arm/headrest. I can see the usefulness of having this quasi mini set up. But it does seem the value might be a tad overstated. What's the price of a single tube and some hardware? As for the plans for the wood top, I think anyone with even the most basic skills could figure it out.....

Yes, the "$149 value" can certainly be debated, depending on how much you value the time and materials involved in cutting the tube and figuring out your own design.

It seems to me to be a great idea, though. I don't recall seeing any threads on this forum documenting mounting a headstock to a workbench in a similar fashion. Maybe it was obvious to everyone else, but it was not obvious to me.

A new bench tube costs $161.69 and a new way tube costs $147.60. Don't know why there is a difference in cost between these two tubes, but the Shop Deputy comes with one of these tubes already cut in half so you don't have to miss around with cutting it yourself, not to mention a few screws, etc. and some plans.

I do think you can can get a tube quite a bit cheaper on ebay, etc., but the choice is yours.
