Planer Stand Construction

Thanks, Chuck, I've seen enough of your work on the forum to know that you are being very generous in your evaluation. That or the dim light/soft focus of the pictures has hidden the cabinet's many flaws (but I know where each of them is).

No, not generous at all. Just calling them as I see them. Hey! everything fits!:D And if they didn't at first - you made them fit. Fitting is one of the most important things to learn in woodworking. Also, you learned that it is possible to use "scrap" wood to make what you need.

Now that you have had the experiance/ thrill of making a carcase, a drawer and a cabinet door, you are on the way to other good stuff.

Flaws? They are only the little things that no one else notices.

Well, in spite of all the good advice I received to abandon or re-purpose this project, I went ahead and finished the planer stand. I did reinforce the construction with some additional screws through the bottom into the sides and may yet add some through the top. But, surprisingly, this is quite sturdy and rolls readily around the shop with the planer on top, my compressor below and a couple of nail guns in the drawer. It isn't fine cabinetry, but this project involved a number of firsts for me and was a good learning experience.

I just discovered that my planer stand and DW735 planer make a pretty good outfeed table for the Shopsmith -- as long as I'm not making a bevel cut with the tilted table.

Here's a pic showing the set up:

Unlike the Shopsmith planer, where the table moves up and down and the cutter head stay stationary., the DW735's cutter head assembly moves up and down while the table stays stationary, so it can be adjusted to match the height of the Shopsmith table.

In addition, the top of the DW735 has two aluminum glide bars on top that are there to facilitate sliding planed lumber back across the top of the planer to get ready to make another pass. These glide strips work just fine when used as an outfeed table

When I built my planer stand, I wasn't thinking about any of this so it is just dumb luck that the planer stand height is in the range where I can adjust the planer's height with the crank and get it to match the Shopsmith table height.

Incidentally, I have built a tilting/height adjusting outfeed table that works really well, but every once in a while I am cutting something very long it is nice to have an additional outfeed surface.
