Speed Increaser vs Pro Router Table Set-up

I would like to perform more standard router functions on my SS 520. My question is, would I be better off getting a speed increaser and using this to perform under table routing functions, or purchase the Pro Router Fence and Table Package from SS? I like the idea of being able to use the headstock and existing table (kind of the idea with a multi-tool) with the speed increaser, but will this perform as well as separate router and table package? Main use will be routing, not shaping. The fence is not the main issue for me, but rather the table, performance of the cut, ease of use, adjustment, etc............

I have used both of my SS 500s in shaper mode, but also have a stand alone 1/2" shaper with 1 hp motor that operates at 10,000 rpm. The motor reverses with a flip of a switch, an important feature when cutting cope and stick patterns for frame and panel constructions, and something you can do with the SS Power Pro. I also have various routers, to include a radial arm saw (Ryobi) dedicated to use as an overarm router, but limited to 1/4" shank cutters. The router end of the motor generates 15,000 rpm. On projects I have used them all, including my SSs in router mode (I have 1/4 & 1/2 inch chucks). What I use depends on what I am cutting and how much I have to shape. For example, sliding dovetails on the SS in router mode cut great. Now all this said, if I were to add one piece of equipment to my SS it would be the speed increaser. The type of work you do will influence your decision. I often do projects that call for frame and panels, and I prefer a shaper for its power and torque when cutting a lot of feet. If I didn't have a stand alone shaper I would buy the speed increaser tomorrow.

To be honest I'd go with a standard router and add a table, either one you make or purchase. Another advantage is you end up with a hand held router to boot.

Shopsmith has not address router issues for either product. That means you have to work things like guide bushings and inserts for yourself. The fence will need some work as well, as a stock rip fence you do not have the option of embedding the cutter, yes there are solutions but again that will be your responsibility.

If you have to have a shopsmith router solution the powerpro has the capacity to work as both an overhead and below table mode, and the ability to turn in both directions which is a plus if doing any shaping operations.

I don't have the speed increaser, never saw much of a value to it.

I guess it is pretty clear how I feel about the subject. Keep in mind it is only my opinion others may have other ideas.

and one of these:



Bosch 1617EVSPK Router Kit

Together they fulfill all my router needs - to me, this was a better approach...I wasn't that impressed with my potential router options on the SS and ultimately felt I needed to get away from expecting my SS to meet all of my woodworking needs.

Thank you for the feedback. A lot to consider. Based on my future needs I think I will go with the Pro Fence System and add a Router. Like the idea of being able to do the separate hand routing functions.

i occasionally see a stand alone version of the OPR for sale..that may be less expensive than buying the newer SS mountable one and it looks to be the same thing only with a stand.
