motor sheave keyway which way up? and more ?

Post by tunznath »

I am about to replace the motor sheave keyway. I have figured out from the other posts that I need to put in order from the motor towards the end of the shaft the spacer, then the sheave, ok but how does the keway fit it has a bent end does it face towards the motor, or towards the shaft end and also which way up?

hope this all makes sense. i was trying a dry fit on my spare motor before tearing down the one in the mark 5 - and cant figure out which way it goes

thanks for all info

The little hook goes into an indenture in the shaft and the key extends from there toward the end of the shaft. Your sketch "b".

If I remember correctly, a close examination of the keyway (the slot in the shaft) will reveal a blind hole (deep spot) that the end of bent portion of the key goes into.

Good to know! The AO Smith I reversed had a straight key without a bend. I wonder what models do and what models don't have a bend?

If there is a bend at the end of the key, it will go into the hole or cutout space on the shaft. I do not remember seeing any Shopsmith motor with this arrangement. The bent key I have seen goes into the the idler shaft and is a shorter key. I always put the key upside down when reinstalling it in the motor shaft so the unused part of the key will now contact the motor floating sheave.

I think this shows clearly how the key should be installed.

NOTE: The mating sheave is not shown. If that sheave was there, the key and the two retaining clips would not be visible.

this was my order with the part numbers
1 504209 Long Key
1 501407 Headless Stop Screw
1 501407 Headless Stop Screw
1 501407 Headless Stop Screw
1 513056 Allen Setscrew
1 504205 Sheave Spacer

The headless stop screws are for the mitre gauge
the key 504209 is supposed to be a long one
that works in combination with 504205 the sheave spacer - and the setscrew 513056 tightens the sheave (Fan Sheave 504207 iirc)
These are for the Fan Sheave 504207 iirc
Do I have the right key? I think that they sent me the short key 501320 -
this would be a problem because I live in the Azores and I had to wait for months for friends to bring it out to me
along wit h bandsaw blades because Shopsmith doesnt ship outside the US
I can measure it in the morning with a ruler and take a picture of the slot as well. The 110 volt motor I have does not have any hole that the bent part goes into, Like in the picture dusty posted (is that not the sheave that is above the motor, that the pork chop attaches to) and also no slot for a retaining clip, and I take it that the 220V motor doesnt either.

Did shopsmith send me the right key?? I wanted the long key for the shaft that comes from the motor?

thanks for the replies and help

The real question is "Did you order the right key"? The part number in your post #6 is the part number for the key shown in my post.
