Scroll saw for sale on craigslist

I don't know enough about this series of scroll saws to know if this would be worth getting. What is eveybody's opinion? Is the parts actually available from Shopsmith? This has been on craigslist now for about a month. I have I believe the 610 series jigsaw that I really haven't used but would not mind having a separate scroll saw.

This is the same scroll saw as the one I have. Yes, parts (at least most) are available from Shopsmith. I would ask that question, however, direct to Customer Service.

I am very pleased with mine.

I have been looking at that as well, 100 bucks for a broken SPT seems a little high though. I paid 150 for my working model, but maybe thats a really good deal. I would definately ask if he can come down a bit.

I bought the same model 4 months ago. I was able to get an old manual and parts to upgrade the saw to "new, modern" status. In total it was about $ 60 in parts

I have both the Jig saw and the Scroll saw and use both. I think the jig saw can handle thick work where as the scroll saw is more for thin delicate work. I like the Jig saw on my 10Er better because you can take off the upper arm and use it on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I acquired my scroll for $50 because it had a broken rear table mount. I would be concerned about how this unit was damaged, did it fall over?

That model # (555272) doesn't come up on the SS website anymore, as it's been replaced by #555685:

I'm not sure of the exact difference, as they are very similar in appearance - I'm sure other folks here more familiar can specify the upgrades with the newer model. As for parts, a parts diagram and price list are here:

These parts seem to be for the newer model, so again, not sure how interchangeable the two are...if it were me and that item was listed around here, I'd get in touch with the seller and go check it out to verify the exact part(s) that are broken or missing and otherwise give the machine a good look over. I'd then go home and call SS customer service and discuss with them to verify if the parts are available and their cost, as well as parts for the upgrade as discussed by texomawood above. Assuming they are all available, total cost was not prohibitive, and the machine otherwise seemed in acceptable condition, I'd get back in touch with the seller...$100 IMO is too high for an older model that is broken, hence why it's been sitting on CL for a month. Assuming the parts are really only $60 (probably more with shipping, as well as the upgrade parts), I'd probably offer him $50 max for it and I'd likely make that a firm and standing offer if he balks.
