Jury Summons / Duty?

I received a jury summons a couple months ago, just before my 71 birthday. So it doesn't look like California has an age limit on jury duty. Have had probably 7 or 8 summons but only had to serve once, and that was a lot of years age. Now that I have retired I don't mind when I get a summons, it will break up my day, and allow me to do my civic duty. Yea like I am excited about doing that......

Bob, I received a summons. I had to apply for the exemption or they will continue to send you a summons. California may be different but it might be worth looking into if you want the exemption. I did it on line. If on line is available it will be on the summons.

I've been very lucky in that I have received 3 jury duty letters, but each time I had recently moved so didn't have to show up at all.

I've only known two people that made it to the actual jury. Both were people who liked it too much, a huge power trip for them and both lacked good real world judgement. Makes me a little aprehensive about jury trials...good thing I'm not a criminal.

i've been getting Jury summons for thirty-five years. Each time i go they ask who is previous Law Enforcement.......I raise my hand they tell me to go in anyway and see if either of the sides needs me??? not picked for duty yet!!! but i do enjoy the break in the routine!!

I get the same treatment being a pastor. The minute either side asks me my profession or reads my jury info sheet they excuse me. I just hate having to get up and make the long drive in rush hour traffic into the downtown to be sent home in a few hours.

I have friend that says if you get a jury summons that has a jury info sheet to fill out and send back, that if you mark you are very strong anti crime and you really don't want to serve on the jury until they bring back hanging they will excuse you immediately. Haven't had the guts to try that one yet.

In today's mail I got a check for $23.00. "FEES $10.00" and "TRAVEL $13.00".

Wonder what tool that should go towards? Maybe I should save the money for a rainy day? Worst thing is that I will have to remember this for income tax time....

Where do you draw the line between self defense and assault? Is it ok to kick and stomp someone repeatedly in the head once they are down on the ground, if they throw the first punch?

Seems to me, self defense means you feel endangered of harm. And to me that means that I can return "force" up to, including, and maybe a little beyond, the point where the attacker is and can be no longer a threat (i.e. if he used a "kung fu" kick on me I would definitely break his dammed leg). That could include rendering him, by whatever means necessary, unconscious, and-or broken to the extent of threat-less. If he's armed, definitely go for unconscious until otherwise.

Good points and that was part of our problem, finding the line of "no longer a threat."

I do not have a street fighting, or any other kind of fighting, background but the phrases: "never turn your back on someone who is down because they may get back up" and "you can't hurt a drunk because they don't feel the pain until tomorrow" sounded like there might be some truth to them.

The guy that threw the first punch was not armed, but had been drinking, and in the end did not get up on his own. The ambulance took him to the hospital. He was never the same, as he suffered brain damage from the fight.

Hung jury split 6 to 6. I called and talked to the prosecutor afterwards about the "line of self defense" we had trouble with as they had not really addressed it during the trial. I don't know if it was ever retried. I had hoped for a more satisfying jury duty experience.

OK, my 3 times, the first one I was sent home, before being "enpaneled."

Next 2 times, I was called. Hey, I'm a grocery clerk, working part time. Either mudshark (attorney) would DIE to get me on their jury. (Sorry for the slur on mudsharks!)

During the case, I decide what is going to happen, and it does. I'm from the Eisenhower administration, and can think. And, am going to.

The last case involved something that took place close to where I live, and also where I took some Jr College courses. I knew the physical layout better than the mudsharks, but didn't reveal that.

Doesn't really matter, because the guy went down (.21 BAC) for a LONG time. (In my opinion, life was not long enough.)

Yes, I work the system. BUT, I try to hear both sides. I want to be the "smart" juror.
