Shopsmith Ad in FWW

Anyone else here come across the SS ad in the new issue of Fine WoodWorking (Dec 2013, No. 236)? Bam! The logo hits you as you turn the cover page. Has to be a first in FWW, an ad from SS - hard to believe. Granted it's for their Ceramic Grain sandpaper, but the logo is there, along with Lowe's at the bottomof the page. Perhaps some new strategies for advertizing SS are moving forward.

Sandpaper is made by the Gator Sandpaper company on a licensing deal. It must not be extremely popular where I'm at because much on the Gator and Shopsmith sandpaper was donated to the local Habitat for Humanity Restore, where it will likely go unsold for quite a while since they want retail prices.

In my neck of he woods, Gator is the offering rather than SS. I like the gator sanding products and get good results. Saw the ad as son as I opened the cover.

Yep! The ad in Fine Woodworking caught my eye really fast. For a quick moment thought I'd opened up the wrong mag. Not only the logo, but the twiced reference to Shopsmith - G2 sanding belts surprised me.

Available at Lowe's and Participating hardware stores.

No reference to Gator or anyone else - just Shopamith!

I wonder if could work to get FWW to take Shopsmith seriously, especially with the PowerPro. This could be a bid to upgrade the Shopsmith image with the fancy folks who like to spend money.

All it would take would be a big ad buy for the PowerPro and pretty soon FWW would take it seriously.

I took another look at the ad last night. Question: Why would you miss an opportunity to put a PP in the background of the FWW ad? They have a belt sander left front. Why not a PP with the 12 inch sanding disk and perhaps one of the SPT sanding tools attached on the ends. Yep, they got their logo and sandpaper predominantly displayed and missed a great chance to place their flagship tool in the background. Hard to understand this.

Possibly they don't want people thinking that these abrasives work only on Shopsmith-brand equipment. Whatever the reason, you can be quite sure the omission wasn't an accident.

I'm still waiting for them to introduce these abrasives for the 12 inch disc and conical disc sander.

Hey,

They did get the brand out there and those people that have a SS now know that the company is still around. There are those that thought it went away like most other American tool manufacturers. One reason eBay sellers are getting premium prices for "vintage" SS parts. It can't hurt to get the logo and brand out there. I for one am happy to see that they are advertising at all.
