One of my fall projects to give up all the small scraps of wood I have horded all spring and summer. So stuff like treated wood and the like have to get dumped but other small bits make for great fire starters.
On our island in the backyard we have a fire pit. With the help of a few handfuls of starters and a few logs I got a nice fire going. It takes only a short while to have a nice bed of glowing embers.

In the mean time the wife and I chopped up some potatoes, carrots, onions and added about a 1/2 pound of ground beef.

Salt and pepper to taste and then made the the foil pasties using a scoop of the mix a pad of butter and then forming them in to little packets. Add a second wrap of foil just in case.

Put them in the coals and turn them in about a half hour. In 45 minutes they are done and ready to eat.
You can see the six here, just before I halled them out and checked to make sure they were done.

Of course this is only our way of doing this and we do miss the crust but this is so much faster and easier then make them at home.... We do make a couple of stops in the UP when we are up there to sample.
I have a copy of the paste recipe that my great grand father used back in the 1890's when he ran a bakery in Hurley WI. It is all in the crust so to speak. So I do feel a little bad going without the crust but hey what we had today tasted great so there is that.

We make those a lot on scout campouts. We call them foil dinners, you can put just about anything you want in them, and yes they are good.

The pasties my grandmother's family used to make had a pastry shell around them and baked but otherwise identical. Sometimes made with stew meat. They were Germans who immigrated to Northern Wisconsin and the UP.
Your subject line sort of threw me on the account of being spelled the same but pronounced differently (as far as I have heard it said) as something else. I was trying to figure out how you made those out of wood, and used the backyard without the neighbors complaining, but I see now. Either pronunciation, sounds like a good weekend afternoon.

Just found this out the other day that long ago, the miners in Butte (Montana) ate pasties with a pastry shell that had a thick edge around it. The edge was so they could hold it with their fingers and then throw the edge away to keep from eating the poisonous substances from copper mining that got on their hands!

If you're grabbing a quick bite while on break from working in your shop it adds plenty! I've eaten motor oil, engine grime, paint, sawdust, etc. in a sandwich when I'm racing daylight or repairing my truck on a work night more times than I care to count.
