Bench/Drill Vise 555994
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... onvise.htm
Does anyone have feedback on one of these vises?
After dropping my Bench Plane I'm ready to do something about my vice(less) situation.
I can't afford to get a workbench with dogs to hold my work, and I am going to need something to hold pieces for doweling on the work table also.
Thanks in advance
Pinkie

This one seems so versatile for our set up with the Mark V.
I also have an old work table/bench/cabinet from the house's previous owner with a plywood top and this would work on that too.
I am wondering if it is "heavy" enough for light use with a hand plane.

Hey Pinkie,
A lot of people don't like Harbor Freight but you might want to check out their solid oak work bench. It's only $179.99

Like I said; so many vises to choose from...........and I haven't seen one that I don't like!Bruce wrote:Here is a patternmaker's vise that has good reviews. It is more expensive but will outlast you according to the reviews.

It isn't that I don't like Harbor Freight, I don't like to purchase items that are made in China! Where is this bench made? It does not say on the web page that you link to.

If the ply on that table is in good condition, get some bench dogs from Rockler or elsewhere, and drill holes in the top to hold the dogs. If needed, store some tools underneath to add weight. An old countertop could also be screwed onto the old table. I've had one like that for years.pinkiewerewolf wrote:This one seems so versatile for our set up with the Mark V.

An old plane jig is just a board with a quarter of half inch lip on one end and a three or four inch board on the other end bottom to catch the edge of the table. For edge planing, clamping to the side of the table legs might work, or screw an apron to the front so that you can clamp to it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
I think I'll order the vise from Shopsmith and use a jig like Hawk advised in the interum.
Once the vise is here I'll let y'all know how it works.
The bords I'm hand planing are large and awkward, but the same width so a jig might be the best solution for this problem anyway.
