I just read that thread and didn't see the ussual disparaging comments. (Except maybe one)

"The quality is below stand alone equipment." but this was from a Shopsmith owner. If you're comparing an early 50s model to say new top of the line powermatic equipment then this argument may be valid. Its' Kinda like comparing a Lexus to a Ferrari. If you're comparing SS offerings to the multitude of budget and bench bench top tools then this argument is not. It depends on your comparison points.

And yes I have every confidence that if properly maintained, the high end powermatic(or other manufacturers) equipment will last as long as the SS. Check out the vintage machinery sites and you will see multiple manufacturers whose equipment stands the test of time. The major difference is that I can still get OEM parts, support and upgrades from the manufacturer for my almost 60 yr old machine. I know of no other manufacturer in any industry that can make this claim.

Recently that has become not totally true.

Out of production parts that have been replaced by newer versions are not available.

That said, all older model(5/V) can be updated to the new stuff.

Or I can just walk 100' to my "stash"...

Anybody with a "stash place" can pick up a couple of parts units cheaply. They just need a roof, not feeding.

A few germain details added!

Upgrades can always be obtained from CS(new), and maybe from EB/CL(used).
