Why sometimes when I hit New Posts it gives me all the new posts in a list and other times it defaults and gives a message that says use other terms ?

My solution was to stop using the "New Posts" and every time I finish a session, click on the "Mark Forums Read" words on the bottom line of the main Forum. This way any new posts I haven't read will show in highlighted print.

A well-known, intermittent problem with the forum software, which the site operators are unable or unwilling to fix.

No problem on my laptop (windows 8) but exactly as you describe on the iPad. When you do get the new posts list, it's kind of like winning the lottery.
I just go through the individual forums when the "new posts' click doesn't work.
