Riving Knife

Post by Lodgepole »

The Shopsmith riving knife for non-through cuts is on sale. Has anyone had experience with this attachment? If so, would you please give me your thoughts on this attachment.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have had one installed for quite some time on my SS and find it works well and has not yet caused a problem.

I cannot recommend its use with very wet wood because it did not stop binding on some wet fir I was ripping a while back, but then I don't think the SS arm would have either.

Against SS warning (lawyers had to say it) I use it full time except when making a new ZCI. Each individual must make that decision; at least its one decision we are so far allowed to make.

I have one but it has seen little use. I only use it for non-through cuts as intended. It has caused no issues so it is doing what it should do.

I would not list this as a must have. I've had my machine since 1976 and only added this knife last year. I've not had problems in all those year so I'm sure I could have lived my life out without this addition. I do tend to like to add things to the shopsmith so maybe I was a bit of a sucker, but that is my nature.

I would not use this as a replacement for the other through cut hardware on the shopsmith.

Having said this I did buy one so it must be worth something, right?

I hope it is worth something. I just now ordered one. I am not sure why because I have been using a homemade riving knife for a few years now. It has been working fine even though it is not the right thickness. Maybe that is why I "bought one".

Actually, I have recently come to realize that dust collection is a "bit better" when the riving knife is installed. Must have something to do with direction of air flow as there is a gaping hole without the riving knife.

We'll see what ever we see. No high expectations and no promises.

I am confused and frustrated. I don't know why since I have been watching this happen time and again for years but I am.

I just rushed to beat a deadline and ordered a riving knife. Within a few hours, I received confirmation that my order had been received and is in-process.

In the same email I learn "It is Out of Stock".

Yes, I am confused and frustrated. Thankfully, I don't really need a riving knife to proceed with my build schedule.

I have the riving knife mounted all the time and like it. I don't like the full guard and would rarely use it if that was all I had. I'd purchase it again.:)

I am very happy to have it and use it whenever the other cannot be employed. Imho it is 'sturdier' than the other, and I hadn't thot about the dust issue befrore Dusty brot it up, but that's a positive bonus.

Btw, after suffering a pinch-n-burn on some extremely reactive redwood a while back, I always have a river in there.

Thanks you all for your thoughts on this attachment. I will definitely be purchasing one before the free shipping expires tomorrow.
