Hi all.. I was poking around and ran across this handy tool that calculates shelf sag using different types of wood as inputs (among other things).. I toyed around with it and now know why our 3/4" thick MDF shelving is sagging close to 1/2" when loaded with 30-40lb of cans in the kitchen..

Anyway, it seems like a good tool to use when figuring the materials to use for your next shelving task:
