Good deal in Fla
Moderator: admin
Say what you want.
I have been lurking around this site for sometime now. I bought my first Shopsmith in around 1980. But to see someone you people love ask me not to bid on something I myself would like to buy is a little one sided. Especially were all he wants to do is clean it up break it apart and resell at a profit. And then to have some yahoo say he wants to break my knee? Give me a break! I wasn't bragging, I was just warning him of what I now know I'm going to do. My top bid will be $800. That is still a good price for what that person has. The seller may not know what he has But I do.
[quote="JPG40504"]Sorry about your attitude!

Well, I think we just found that out, Red!
Not so "fine," we're all friends here, and if a member asks us to back off of a bid, we ALL do it. Especially one with terminally failing health.
Why don't you take your gloating attitude, and quit posting here. When we argue (and we do) it is amongst friends, and usually relates to politics, or ER versus Mk5/7. I don't think I've EVER seen someone bragging about stiffing another Member on ebay, here.

Bill would not 'break it up'! He restores them. Yes he has salvaged others to obtain parts. Yes he is in profit mode, but not exhorbitantly so.fine wrote:I have been lurking around this site for sometime now. I bought my first Shopsmith in around 1980. Yes we be one sided. We know Bill. You are still an unknown. We side with what we know for sure.
The criticism is of your attitude, not your intention to snipe. Sniping is fair play on e-bay. Goading another bidder is just plain infantile.
Not a very good 'entrance' to this forum, but we can be tolerant, can you be so? We shall see if thee speaks the truth re your 'final' bid!

I think you miss the point - as my mother always used to say "the problem's not the message but the delivery". If you want to bid on and/or snipe the item, that is certainly your prerogative and I don't think anyone would be reasonable to expect that it wouldn't occur on an E-Bay auction…but for your very first post to this forum to read the way it does is not a very good introduction to the community. What would make you think Bill was directing his post at you? Seeing how you had never surfaced on this forum at that point, obviously he has no clue who you are. He was letting the various forum friends in FL know that he was aware of this auction and it's close to his house and he hoped to buy it. If you are interested and wish to bid/snipe then have at it but if you have any interest in being a meaningful member of this community, I suggest you take a deep breath and start over with a friendly introduction and "howdy". As someone who lives in FL, you have several very knowledgable members here could be a tremendous resource for you on all things Shopsmith, especially including Bill who is considered the foremost expert on Shopsmith rebuilding, repair and restoration. As someone who lives about as far in the continental US from Bill as possible, I only wish I had such a resource in my "neighborhood".fine wrote:I have been lurking around this site for sometime now. I don't know any of you people and at this point I don't want to! As far as my attitude is concerned lets look at it from my side of the computer screen. Too have anybody ask me not to go after a product that is to sell on a open auction just so they can purchase it cheaper and sell for a profit is in My opinion uncalled for. Indeed I am sorry for his bad health. I wish things like cancer came upon no one. And if you took my statement as goading him then that was taken or said wrongly. For that I do apologize. I was just letting it be known I to am interested and let the game begin. Do you really thing Bill would sell me the band saw and jointer if I didn't bid against him or would he sell it to one of his buddies here on this forum? Someone said and I agree with the statement I have no history here. But I am in need of a band saw and jointer. And to purchase those 2 items and get all the other stuff basically for free only made good sense to me. But with all that said I am finished with this. You people can think what you want and say what you want. But let me end with this I think a lot less of you people than you could ever think of me. In my way of thinking every one is equal, newbie or not.JPG40504 wrote:Bill would not 'break it up'! He restores them. Yes he has salvaged others to obtain parts. I don't think any of us have anything against you bidding against Bill. I think your mistake was posting what seemed like a challenge or something.
Bill is a good guy and he is more than fair to all of us. I personally know Bill have gone to his house many times (we only live about 25 miles apart or so) and I think I know Bill's heart.
If you want to the machine great fantastic go for it. I don't know what you meant to say in your first post but it was almost like your were rubbing Bill's nose in the fact you intended to bid against him.
Let me add I don't know what you are doing but in this post you gave your "top" price. That almost seems like you are trying to get someone to bid it up. After reading your first post and your last post I almost suspect you are the seller.

Nobody asked YOU not to bid on anything.
However, I'm very willing to bet you could have posted, or emailed/PM etc., your need for the bandsaw and jointer. With that you could have easily pooled your money with Bill and BOTH got a great deal on what you needed.
Hell, I GAVE a jointer (without any strings) to a forum member that I never met, several states away, and had only conversed with a few times on here. I have seen others do this dozens of times.
Many of us owe Bill a great deal (whether he thinks so or not) so of course we are quick to defend him. My mother always told me, "If you ever find yourself in a disagreement with several different people, look in the mirror."

IMO Fine hasn't done anything wrong. Giving fair warning that he was going to bid on an item on ebay was more than was required and I didn't read his first post as goading Bill. If he changes his mind about how much to bid, or if to bid, that's his prerogative too.
Bill is a great guy and I has no reason to assume Fine isn't either. He probably doesn't know Bill's backstory and even if he did I still see nothing wrong. Some of the greetings he has received were IMO inappropriately hostile.
I hope you will stick around Fine. There are a lot of good people on this forum who are knowledgeable and friendly.

Well, that's the drawback to text only. Since we don't have the posters true intent we infer whatever our personal biases lead us to. He could have easily had a smile on his face while typing that and mean nothing harmful, I don't know.
I looked at a post, saw that it was the first and only, and read it as:
"Hey, thanks for posting about a great deal. I'll use your forums to find said deal, then create an account with the name 'fine' (as if I'm angry someone else wants it) and post about how I'm going to steal it at the last second... Sucks to be you!"
My inference was obviously wrong based on fine's responses. Maybe there is a way to still flip this around... Bidding against each other hurts you both and whoever gets it will pay hundreds more than necessary.
