Headstock Maintenance

Post by backhertz »

I'm planning to take advantage of the parts sale before the end of the month. I have 3 headstocks: a 1981, 1988, & 1989. I found inside the headstocks, wherever saw dust had laid for a while, there was rust forming. Of all the headstocks, the 1989 was the worst- one of the quill bearings was no good. On my 1989, the fan sheave on the motor was warped! I'm gonna need a bunch of stuff.

Two things are evident: cleaning and lubrication are mandatory. You can either do it or replace parts.

Good point on the maintenance.
Along with the maintenance I can see where dust collection will head off some of these problems too.

I do not feel so bad now. I bought a 500 and then it quit on me so i took one class and then started to take it apart. nothing was the same as in the class as i had a 1953 model and the ones in the class were newer. after all is said and done i need all new parts. Wow someone had taken a HAMMER AND CHISEL TO IT. No kidding it had dings in it from a hammer and big bites in the metal from something sharp. oh well it looks like about $300.00 to repair all the damage. even the motor fan sheave had a crack on the shaft. I think i will have the motor looked at by an electric motor man before i buy parts. that $300 is factory parts that i priced online here. The cheapest part to a shaft that run thru the headstock was $3.75 for the quill feed sleeve. The spring is off if i can put it back Ok but i have read and read and still confused:confused: about how and where the spring is supposed to be bent to fit on the screw on the shaft. if only i had a good picture of it bent like it is supposed to be.I just tried to use the insert image thing on top and it asked me for my URL if i knew that i would be a very smart man but being i am just an old cowboy trying to live in the modern world i guess i will have to wait.I do know what it want i just dont know what it is and dont have the gumtion to try to look it up or ask my sons who would not know but try to tell me where to find it and it would cn=onfuse me see i have already lost it. i cant spell any more well have a good day and a better tomorrow. WHEN i get ss up and running I will be a happy man again.

Jacob Anderson sells Shopsmith repair DVDs on Ebay, in addition to rebuilding himself. His video is both very informative and covers all Mark Vs from the 50's until now. I bought both DVD for $29 plus shipping. I don't regret it.
