Josh,

I wonder why SS never implemented the reversal ability from the factory. It seems to be a no brainer, or is there some mechanical issue with running things backwards that we don't know about?

No!

Cooling is not an issue because the vanes are straight and blow air in either direction.

The only moving parts inside are the bearings and they don't care which direction they run. Well, the rotor also moves but it doesn't touch anything except the bearings.


I can't say why shopsmith never offered it but I speculate it's because they have used Emerson motors in A LOT of shopsmiths...especially since the mid 80's. The Emerson windings have a hidden, shared connection between one side of the start and run windings making reversal much more difficult (I only know it's even possible because of an old post here where someone stated they had a motor shop reverse it)

The Magna American folks agreed hence the Mark VII.:cool:

However I suspect the double tilt made it mandatory(or reversed shaper cutters).

They just could not agree on the model designation!(VII / 7).:D

The links didn't work...did they work for anyone else? I get a 403 forbidden, so perhaps you haven't set them as shared?
