Thanks for that feedback. Now I will know why I have that box of unused serrated blades. I picked up a dispenser full of plain blades and changed all of the serrated blades out of my utility knives. If I cut any fabrics, I'll give them a try.reddog5362 wrote:Dusty, the serrated blades work really well on carpet and I would assume other fabrics.
Better yet, I'll ask one of my SILs who has done professional upholstery.

Fair enough - I guess when I'm typically using them, I'm in "production mode", trying to get sheetrock etc. hung or otherwise get a big job done efficiently and quickly, so time is $$ and a new blade is only about $0.15-$0.20 each, with two usuable sides, so I typically just dull them and replace them.robinson46176 wrote:I've never used the other blades but on the common blades I normally find a quick swipe on my flat diamond hone brings them back pretty quick and I keep going.

I can hone quicker than replacing. Yes even with drywall crud on the blade(they work better clean anyway).dgale wrote:Fair enough - I guess when I'm typically using them, I'm in "production mode", trying to get sheetrock etc. hung or otherwise get a big job done efficiently and quickly, so time is $$ and a new blade is only about $0.15-$0.20 each, with two usuable sides, so I typically just dull them and replace them.
It only takes a few strokes on each side.

And they would probably do a great job on a tough steak...

I've posted this before somewhere.
I was trying to cut the pink panel insulation with a circular saw and one of the popular red saw blades.
That did not work well at all. I had a major kickback which I could control because I had both hands on the saw. Had I been using one hand I'm not sure what would have happen, perhaps I'd have nickname of lefty??
It seems the coating on the blade did not like the insulation. It was a major effort to clean the blade, it was close to being permanently bonded on.
I know I'll never do that again.
Your mileage may vary but a utility knife sounds pretty safe to me.

cut with saw
Dusty: I just had a project using two inch pink Styrofoam.
I cut it with the hand held jig saw with a fine Bosch blade.
Very little dust and very smooth cut. will attach some pictures.
I have tried it with skil-saw but to much blade speed ..
using the jigsaw did not find anything sticking to the blade..........

the first picture
I suppose someone will ask what the fire is in the background of the first
picture. I used to have a woodstove to heat the basement but, put in a propane JOTUL stove a few years ago. to old to cut wood anymore.
So, that is the flames from the stove. will be about -25 degrees again tonight here.
It is quite cool outside right now..::
