Wood Burls

The burls I have are in the woods and no open ground anywhere within a couple miles. These are up in the tree and vary in size and look like the one in the vid. that was on You Tube. Thanks for posting that. When the weather straightens out I will take the saw and snowmobile and cut one out as I can use the rest of the tree for firewood. There is one area in the woods that every tree has one on it and they are all cherry trees 6 to 8 inch dia. The burls re different sizes and there are a couple that looks to be about 2 foot long. If I can find one small enough I will saw into it with my bandsaw and see what it is like. My grand daughter wants a jewlery box and this may be a good use for some of it

Oh! I think I phrased my statement wrong. Wood and sand can show up on xray but we have to lower the energy to a level not normally used in medicine.

My guess is what you are seeing is self repair from a limb falling off or an infestation by a bug. In both cases I think you will find rotted wood within the burl. I will be real interested to know what you find so please let us know.

Burl that I'm familiar with (those used in pipe making) they were formed in the root or higher up on the tree because of some external pressure (such as another tree, a vine, or something that bent the wood)

These trees are in an area that I had logged off 25 years ago and at that time they were probably 1/2 dia. What I found odd id that they are all n the same area. I am wondering about rot myself and I think maybe had bug or wood pecker damage at some time. We do have alot of pilated wood peckers and they like the worms that get on them. It is a really good area for mushrooms
